Job description

Job Title: Director of Residence Life

Department: Housing and Residence Life

Reports To: Dean of Students

FSLA: Exempt

Summary : The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the visionary and strategic leadership, direction, analyses, assessments, projections, planning and management of the Department of Housing and Residence Life. The Director is responsible for creating a welcoming and supportive community within the residence halls . The Director, using sound educational and management principles, ensures that the policies, programs, services, and processes cultivate and support academically centered residential communities within a residence hall system serving approximately 1,200 students in four residence halls and three apartment complexes. The vision of the leadership for the institution is to expand the number of residential students by strategically planning for new facilities and by developing effective marketing and programmatic efforts to promote this growth. The Director of Residence Life works collaboratively with various campus offices to allow for seamless high-quality service to students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

• Provide leadership and vision that aligns the Department's activities with the missions of Student Development and the University.
• Provides overall managerial leadership of the department in terms of operations, facilities, and residence life.
• Track monthly spending and budgets. Establishes and oversees the Department's financial operations including budget, rate setting, marketing, and accounting.
• Interview prospective student or staff applicants and make decisions and/or recommendations concerning their potential placement.
• Oversees the daily operations of the department including contracts, assignments, billing/collections and policy/procedure development.
• Oversees the development and delivery of a comprehensive residential life program.
• Supervise and provide support and guidance to Residence Directors.
• Coordinate the student staff program including the selection, training, supervision, leadership development and evaluation of approximately 30 students.
• Coordinate the efforts of the Residence Life Staff to offer quality educational, cultural, recreational and social programs in the residence halls.
• Implement, evaluate and develop programs using the Residence Life Programming Model.
• Assist in creating and maintaining Housing regulations and policies.
• Assist the Dean of Students with disciplinary procedures.
• Work with office staff to project and maintain various budgets within the department.
• Provide leadership and execute protocol in crisis situations.
• Perform other job-related duties as needed.
• Serve on campus committees as needed.

Education and/or Experience

Required: Bachelor’s Degree. Preferred: Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, or Counseling. Previous experience in student personnel work and/or related administration area in residence halls, housing operations, and related settings; Demonstrated competencies and success in an academic community reflected in excellent leadership, management, supervision, planning, and assessment. Outstanding individual and group communication skills; Demonstrated skills in facilities operations management and renovation. Prior responsibility for occupancy and budget projections and management linked with strategic planning.

Additional Requirements: The successful candidate will show demonstrated success, knowledge, skills, and experience in the following areas: academically related program analysis and development; strategic and operational planning; policy formation student development theory; prevention, intervention, and crisis management; selection, training, and evaluation of housing/residence life staff; budget development, management, and projections; and facility and housing operations. The ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff to plan, implement, and assess outcomes of services and programs related to the short and long-term goals of the Department of Housing, Student Development, and the University is essential. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

You will be evaluated in the area of safety practices during the annual evaluation period. If safety rules are violated, appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken, not to exclude termination.
