Specimen Handling Technician
Job Description
We are seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused technician to join our laboratory team. This role is critical in ensuring accurate specimen handling, data integrity, and exceptional client service throughout the testing process. The ideal candidate will have experience in laboratory operations and customer service, with a strong understanding of regulatory compliance and medical terminology.
Responsibilities
Properly handle and prepare received specimens for laboratory testing.
Perform data entry and quality control of sample information in a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Scan and organize documentation to support testing workflows.
Review test requisition forms and shipment manifests to ensure documentation matches received samples.
Resolve sample and document discrepancies by collaborating with team members.
Ensure customer satisfaction throughout the laboratory processing cycle.
Route specimens to appropriate workflows for downstream testing.
Serve as the primary customer contact for all laboratory tests (clinical, pharma, and clinical trial).
Manage customer needs from kit / sample delivery to final reporting and deliverables.
Maintain a complaint log and escalate issues to leadership as needed.
Ensure policies and procedures reflect current practices.
Maintain accurate billing and reimbursement records for clinical samples.
Track and log current samples in testing.
Perform quality checks on all customer deliverables, partnering with team members for secondary QC when required.
Train new personnel as needed.
Essential Skills
High School diploma required; Associate’s degree (AA or AS) strongly preferred.
Minimum 1 year of experience equivalent to a Specimen Handling or Assistant Lab Technician or related field.
At least 2 years of customer service experience required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, such as word processing, Excel, and information systems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Understanding of regulatory compliance and HIPAA.
Knowledge of working with potentially biohazardous specimens.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Positive can-do attitude and the ability to adapt and be flexible in a fast-paced and evolving work environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.50 - $18.50 / hr.
