Security Officer Position

The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Facilities and Business Services is seeking candidates for a Security Officer position within the Cultural Education Building (CEC). Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following :

• Understand, operate, and monitor security devices and alarm monitoring systems;
• Work closely with executive staff and external law enforcement, fire, and emergency services to respond to security and emergency incidents;
• Monitor entrances and exits of building to ensure security and to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering or remaining in the building;
• Approach and intercede with trespassers, unruly clients, and suspicious activities;
• Patrol and monitor the Education Building, inspecting premises for hazardous conditions and activities;
• Provide directional information to visitors;
• Prepare reports documenting and detailing activities and incidents;
• Follow and enforce NYSED policies for staff and patrons.

Minimum Qualifications :

NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Conditions of Employment : This will be a permanent competitive appointment, or a permanent non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Candidates are required to possess a New York State Security Guard License at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Security Officer is dependent upon maintaining New York State Security Guard License. Failure to maintain New York State Security Guard License will result in removal from employment. The work schedule for this position may be as follows :

This position leads to a maximum salary of $55,081 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
