Overview
Axcelis is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Working closely with product and marketing managers, the engineer is responsible for developing innovative solutions to difficult engineering challenges facing ion implanters. Projects may include new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer will champion sound engineering methods, analysis tools, DfX, and concurrent product development processes to deliver solutions right the first time. In addition to owning projects, the engineer will also guide less experienced engineers, knowing when to coach and when to delegate to elevate others on the team.
Responsibilities
- Develop new and innovative solutions for existing and future ion implanters.
- Ensure adherence to the development process, including requirements planning, schedule estimates, concept reviews, design reviews, verification, and validation test plans.
- Monitor progress of projects, confer with program and project engineers, and review reports to ensure development is progressing according to schedule and within budgetary guidelines. Recommends corrective action as required.
- Manage the mechanical engineering interface to the design services group and to offshore teams to deliver quality designs and on-time performance.
- Communicate to customers and cross-functional groups the status of various development projects. Ensure that products and projects are delivered to meet customer requirements and specifications.
- Hold mechanical engineers accountable to quality goals, schedules, development process, and system performance. Maintain close day-to-day interaction with project managers and key customers to manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products.
- Ensure mechanical designs meet design objectives as well as safety, industry (SEMI), and customer-specific requirements.
- Execute design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies; experience with semiconductor capital equipment is a plus.
- Troubleshoot, identify root cause, and recommend corrective actions to system-level problems that cross multiple engineering disciplines. Knowledge of controls and electrical systems is helpful.
Qualifications
Accomplished mechanical engineer capable of contributing to technical design.Hands-on approach and ability to get the job done right.Practical experience with the design, manufacture, and service of highly automated electromechanical systems.Strong curiosity about the fundamental physics behind complex systems; willingness to dig deeper than surface explanations.Strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.Solid technical background to understand, communicate, and make decisions to improve the overall product and mechanical architecture.Experience working with offshore teams is a benefit.Capital equipment design experience is a plus.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Strong Project Management Skills are required.Experience with a PLM system; knowledge of PTC / Windchill is a plus.3D modeling and FEA analysis skills; knowledge of PTC / Creo and Ansys is a plus.BSME (MSME preferred).10+ years of experience in Mechanical Engineering.Equal Opportunity Statement

U.S. Base Salary Range
$145,398.88 - $218,098.32
This base salary range reflects the typical compensation for this role across U.S. locations. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level; individual pay is determined based on multiple factors, including job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, work location, and internal equity. The range provides the opportunity for growth and progression as you develop within the role. Base pay is one part of our U.S. total compensation package which includes eligibility in the Axcelis Team Incentive bonus plan, and comprehensive benefits package (for regular employees working 20+ hours a week).
