Job Description
Apply sound knowledge of engineering principles and practices to designing and planning installations, replacements, and maintenance of Northeast Ohio Natural Gas pipeline system. Planning complex projects such as distribution supply line extensions and relocations; gas measurement and regulation facilities; (maintaining) corrosion control facilities; and specifying maintenance schedules for pipeline components regulated by Federal and State authorities are typical projects for Engineers.
Engineers complete the design for projects, process customer service requests, generate cost estimates, determine easement and permit requirements, support project scheduling, and prepare completed project documentation. They also provide regular updates to maintain data in work, safety, asset, hydraulic modeling, and geographical information systems.
The Engineer communicates with internal and external customers, visits project work sites, and effectively balances their time between the office and the field.
FOCUS :
Engineering, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance
Responsibilities
- Conduct surveys of pipeline construction routes and determine optimum locations for pipelines and related components; specify gas facility types, sizes, and materials to meet D.O.T. design requirements on all varieties of NEO distribution pipelines; and dictate gas handling requirements, including materials and procedures for system maintenance and modifications.
- Calculate pipeline and component flow capacity at various pressures, as well as pressure drop at specified flow rates through pipelines and related components. Review and approve design work by others for service lines for capacity and sizing.
- Determine pipeline and components strength testing requirements including design limits, pressure, test medium, and timing.
- Prepare construction drawings, maps, and review municipal and private construction drawings to minimize interference with existing or proposed NEO facilities.
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert for instrumentation, measurement, and control.
- Design commercial and industrial Meter Set Assemblies (MSA).
- Provide detailed construction project cost estimates.
- Design facility installations such as bridge supports, railway crossings, and industrial gas metering equipment.
- Specify and plan corrosion control facilities, including requirements for insulators, galvanic anodes, impressed current stations, and cathodic mitigation measures.
- Occasionally direct field operators and perform subordinate work as needed.
- Operate computers for extended periods.
- Develop engineering and operating standards in accordance with regulations, and provide training to Operations staff.
- Perform pipeline construction inspection.
- Utilize system modeling software and hydraulic calculations to identify operational deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
- Investigate complex problems, identify solutions, and implement corrective measures.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program.Strong business communication skills.Ability to investigate technical data and solve complex problems.Knowledge of corrosion control design and maintenance is a plus.Experience with CAD software systems.Interpersonal skills to establish effective professional relationships.Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.Experience in the natural gas industry, pipeline design, construction, or operations; familiarity with GIS, hydraulic modeling software (e.g., SynerGi), and safety regulations (PHMSA, NFPA 54, state codes) is helpful.Physical Demands
Work involves light manual labor in the office and field, including construction, operations, and maintenance tasks. Exposure to outdoor elements is possible, and lifting objects up to thirty pounds may be required.
