Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking applicants for a full-time, Student Basic Needs Navigator position at the Walla Walla campus.

General Description :

The Basic Needs Navigator works as part of a team of Educational & Career Navigators who support student success by providing information and assistance with a variety of student supports. This position will provide a central point of contact for programs and services designed to address students' basic needs such as food, housing, health care, etc. The Basic Needs Navigator will also work to enhance collaborations with community partners and increase college resources which support low-income students.

Essential Functions :

Direct Student Support

  • Establish positive and trusting relationships with students.
  • Coordinate services that increase students' basic needs security and support academic persistence and success.
  • Identify and assist with access to potential sources of funding and in-kind support to enhance students' opportunities to complete programs of study.
  • Foster student accountability, self-advocacy, self-awareness, and effective use of resources.
  • Serve as an advocate for students in their relationships with instructors, administrators, and college and community resource staff.

Coordination and Communication

  • Establish and maintain effective working partnerships with multiple stakeholders including funding sources, campus departments, community partner agencies, and prospective employers; work collaboratively and maintain regular communication in order to maintain and strengthen student support network and training pipeline.
  • Develop opportunities for students to gain real-world information and exposure to targeted career pathways.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other college departments and community agencies for the purpose of enhancing student resources and support.
  • Attend academic advising trainings, department and division meetings.
  • Expanding Resource Availability

  • Work collaboratively with Student Success Center colleagues and other College departments and / or programs to ensure students have access to supportive services including screening and referral to Workforce eligibility programs and other types of academic and non-academic supports.
  • Track and report student participation and progress in various eligibility program services.
  • Coordinate with community agency partner staff to enhance student access to community resources and increase campus-based services.

  • Required Qualifications :

    Any combination of education, experience, and / or training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job may be considered by the college.

  • Bachelor's degree in social or behavioral science or closely related field, OR Associate's Degree AND two years of experience working with at-risk populations. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for required education at the college's discretion.
  • Experience working with disadvantaged, at risk, and multi-cultural populations.
  • Experience using workplace technologies (Microsoft Office and database programs).
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience working with community partner agencies desired
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to accommodate multiple stakeholders with various interests and needs.

    Conditions / Terms of Employment

    This position is in a bargaining unit for which AFT is the exclusive representative.

    This is a full-time, overtime eligible professional position. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment. WWCC participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your Form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Official college transcripts required at time of hire. Candidates may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition of employment. Information from the background check may not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position. The college is a tobacco free institution.

    Work is performed almost exclusively indoors in an office environment. Exposure to hazards is limited to those commonly found in office environments. This contract position work schedule will typically be Monday through Friday 8-hours each day. During the summer, work schedule is Monday through Thursday 10-hours each day.

  • The typical work area includes office setting, classrooms, partner institutions, and co-location sites for outreach and marketing activities.
  • Position requires movement between various buildings on campus creating exposure to weather.
  • Some in-state travel is required and may include occasional overnight stays.
  • Ability to sit, walk or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard, multi-line phone, handle individual papers, write and take notes, prepare informational and marketing materials.
  • Ability to hear normal speech, speak and hear on the telephone, and speak in person.
  • Vision sufficient to read documents, computer screens, perform close up work; ability to adjust focus frequently.
  • Compensation :

    Annual salary range for initial placement based on the represented exempt salary schedule is PR01 : Step A-F : $58,350-$66,017 , with scheduled salary increment increases every 12 months until you reach the top of the scale. The college has an excellent benefit program including paid sick leave; paid vacation leave; medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance; retirement and two optional deferred compensation programs. All full-time employees will automatically have 3% of taxable income deferred into the State of Washington Deferred Compensation Program (DCP). All administrative exempt staff set aside 1% of their gross salary in a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) (VEBA). All exempt employees are required to participate in this program. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.
