LOCATION :

  • California (hybrid role) EMPLOYMENT TYPE :   Full-time, exempt WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING The Risk Director owns day-to-day portfolio risk management across KORT’s acquiring business.
  • This leader drives dispute and fraud reduction, card-brand / bank program compliance, exposure governance (reserves / holds), and on-going monitoring / readjudication—freeing the VP Risk to focus on strategy, credit policy, and cross-functional initiatives.
  • The ideal candidate blends strong analytical judgment, operational rigor, people leadership, and confident engagement with banks, card brands, and executive stakeholders. 1) Portfolio Risk & Monitoring Leadership Run the risk operating rhythm (daily / weekly reviews, threshold alerts, escalations).
  • Segment by vertical / MCC / bank / BIN; set trigger thresholds; prioritize outliers for action.
  • Lead readjudications and remediation plans; drive timely merchant-level interventions. 2) Disputes & Fraud Governance Reduce losses via proactive controls.
  • Operationalize dispute tooling (RDR / Order Insight / Ethoca) and representment best practices.
  • Track refund behavior, CB distribution curves, and issuer feedback to preempt spikes. 3) Card-Brand & Bank Program Management Own ongoing compliance with Visa CNP dispute / fraud metrics and Mastercard SAFE / EFM tolerance; manage early-warning / program merchants to closure.
  • Prepare / routinely deliver program dashboards and remediation evidence to sponsor banks.
  • Coordinate with Legal / Compliance on MATCH and regulatory considerations. 4) Credit Exposure, Reserves & Collections Interface Set and maintain reserve methodology (rolling / upfront / event-driven) with Finance; test sufficiency and execute changes.
  • Oversee rejects / ACH returns / AR risk signals; partner with Collections on recovery workflows.
  • Recommend holds / closures and loss provisions; escalate per authority matrix. 5) Policy, Controls & Risk Fees Maintain the Risk & Compliance Fee framework (performance-based fees tied to dispute / fraud thresholds); ensure accurate monthly assessment and collections.

Publish risk standards and playbooks (thresholds, SOPs, letters / addenda templates). 6) Data, Reporting & Tooling Own portfolio scorecards and executive readouts (weekly / monthly) :

  • CB ratios, Visa CNP ratio / events, MC fraud rate, refunds, reserves, AR, program exposure.
  • Ensure dashboards accurately reflect thresholds and cases. 7) Cross-Functional & External Partnerships Serve as day-to-day counterpart to sponsor banks and processors; manage audits / shadow reviews.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting (handoff from onboarding), Compliance / Legal, Finance / AR, Ops, Sales / AM to align actions and messaging.
  • Support M&A diligence and post-close hygiene (MCC cleanup, reserve migration, program compliance). 8) People Leadership Manage, coach, and develop Investigators / Analysts; set SLAs and quality bars.
  • Run training / calibration to ensure consistent decisions and documentation quality.
  • WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR 8–10+ years in acquiring / merchant risk, fraud prevention, or payments compliance; 3+ years leading risk teams.
  • Proven success managing high-risk verticals (e.g., direct marketing / subscription, nutraceuticals, telehealth, sweepstakes, digital goods) and mixed low-risk portfolios.
  • Deep knowledge of card-brand programs (Visa CNP dispute / fraud, MC SAFE / EFM, MATCH) and sponsor-bank oversight expectations.
  • Strong analytical toolkit (advanced Excel; SQL / BI a plus); comfort with risk engines and dispute platforms.
  • Excellent communication and executive presence; able to translate risk signals into business actions and defend decisions with banks / card brands.
  • Track record implementing reserves / holds, dispute-reduction programs, and fee frameworks with measurable results.
