Job Duties :

The Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement position under the limited direction of Sergeant, Police Officer II or Director / Chief of Police. Officers must be capable of providing a full range of law enforcement services. They enforce laws, investigate complaints, investigate incidents that may have an impact on the University, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend and arrest offenders, identify the source of problems in the Stout community and work with the Stout community to resolve issues.

All Police Officers in permanent status are expected to have the ability to conduct complex investigations, take photographs, collect physical evidence and assist less senior officers in similar circumstances. Police Officers must be capable of preparing complete written reports of all investigation and testifying regarding those reports when necessary. Police Officers must maintain a high level of proficiency in the use of police equipment including the handling and use of firearms and be capable of using deadly force when appropriate based on the laws of the State of Wisconsin and Department policy.

Police Officers should be capable of working in cooperation with officers from other agencies and interacting with persons from other University departments, mental health and social services agencies. Police Officers may be required to participate in crowd control and dignitary protection details.

Experienced Police Officers may be selected to serve as Field Training Officers, Evidence Technicians or other specialty areas, in which cases additional training is normally provided. Experienced officers may also be assigned to Court Duties, and / or Crime Prevention programming.

Police Officers must, at all times, support the UW Stout Police department's mission, UW Stout's mission, providing essential law enforcement functions, respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals. Police Officers must deal ethically with the public, valuing trustworthiness, respect, inclusivity, responsibility, justice, fairness, caring, civic virtue and citizenship, having character, pride and professionalism.

Key Job Responsibilities :

  • Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
  • Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
  • Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
  • Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community

Department :

University Police (Police & Parking Services) is a state certified police agency vested with providing law enforcement services for the University of Wisconsin - Stout. Officers either meet or exceed the training requirements of the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. University Police are available 24 / 7 / 365 to help students, faculty, staff and guests in need of assistance through active patrols of campus or dispatched response protocols. University Police collaborates with campus departments and community agencies offering resources and support regarding crime prevention, emergency response, and public safety initiatives. University Police also manages all of the on-campus parking, including permit sales, parking lot maintenance, and enforcement of parking regulations.

Compensation :

Minimum starting salary of $26 / hr - $28 / hr.

12 month probationary period required.

Required Qualifications :

  • Must be eligible to be certified by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board by the date of hire.
  • Must possess or be eligible to possess a Wisconsin Driver's License by the date of hire.
  • Minimum of 60 college credits earned / completed.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment including sensitivity to personal and confidential information.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness, and resourcefulness.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and special events as required by the academic calendar.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Degree in criminal justice or related field.
  • Prior law enforcement experience, especially in a campus, community-oriented, or municipal setting.
  • Working knowledge in the use of CAD systems, MACH Client and TraCS.
  • Specialized training in campus / community policing, crisis intervention, or threat assessment.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrated experience in problem-solving policing, de-escalation, and conflict mediation.
  • Understanding of Clery Act , Title IX, FERPA, and other laws / regulations that impact campus safety.
  • Physical Demands

  • Arrest subjects, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting subjects using maneuvers and weapons and resort to the use of hands and feet and other approved weapons in self-defense.
  • Load, unload, aim and fire from a variety of body positions, handguns, shotguns and other agency firearms under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in certification standards.
  • Operate a law enforcement vehicle during both the day and night : in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.
  • Pursue fleeing subjects and perform rescue operations which may involve quickly entering and exiting patrol vehicles : lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles; jumping down from elevated surfaces; climbing through openings; jumping over obstacles, ditches and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.
  • Administer emergency medical aid and lift, drag, and carry people away from dangerous situations and secure and evacuate people from particular areas.
  • Direct traffic for extended periods of time.
  • Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas which may involve feeling and detecting objects, walking for long periods of time, detaining people and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.
  • Conduct video and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.
  • Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include such things as working rotating shifts both dayshift and overnight, walking on foot patrol and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.
  • Put on and operate a gas mask in situations where chemical munitions are used.
  • Extinguish small fires by using a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.

  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, special events and holidays.
