Overview

The Lead Endoscopy Technician, under the supervision of and / or Clinical Manager and charge RN, is responsible for preparing supplies and equipment for interventions, using appropriate techniques according to current industry standards. Provides technical services as assigned and directed by physicians in the OR, Endoscopy and Intensive Care Units. Primary assist to physicians with procedures and emergent cases taking place in the ED and Critical Care setting, responsible for equipment handling and obtaining of tissue specimens during GI and pulmonary procedures. The Lead Endoscopy Technician assists and / or performs patient procedures that are within the scope of their unit specific Skills Summation. S / he seeks assistance and support when necessary, assists in data collection, organizes those aspects of patient care for which s / he is responsible, and maintains accountability for own practice and those functions delegated to the Endoscopy Technician. Within a specified work period, provides care that is consistent with overall admission to post-discharge plan. S / he practices within accepted ethical and legal parameters.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Prioritizes and addresses technical needs to meet patient conditions.
  • Provides psychological and social support for patient / families.
  • Transports patients to and from units as well as discharge.
  • Participates in discharge planning and patient education.

Manages Equipment and Inventory

  • Appropriately manages equipment and supplies.
  • Able to process equipment to provide proper and safe disinfection or sterilization.
  • Manages equipment, accessories, and supplies, including equipment troubleshooting and sending for repair.
  • Maintains inventory of all supplies.
  • Maintains logs and records related to equipment usage and reprocessing for quality, safety, and survey / certification readiness.
  • Observation / Communication / Documentation

  • Completes a timely and thorough observation at the time of contact.
  • Updates when care and practice indicate a change in patient status.
  • Observes and communicates changes to the RN.
  • Documents intervention and patient's response to interventions and any changes in patient condition on CIS.
  • Communicates and documents expressed patient / family needs.
  • Reports and implements corrective action, as directed by RN, based on the recognition of subtle changes in the condition of the patient.

  • Demonstrates knowledge in use of department medical equipment, refer to unit specific competency summation.
  • Identifies own learning needs, sets goals and meets them.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equipment functionality.
  • Teamwork

  • Assists the health care team during for pre, intra, and post-procedure patient care including specimen handling.
  • Accurately processes and communicates provider orders to RN.
  • Communicates need for appropriate referrals to RN.
  • As a lead primary technician, provides training to new staff during their orientation, in-services all staff on industry standards, new processes, and new equipment.
  • Compliance / Safety

  • Responsible for reporting any safety-related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas / RDE tool; attends all safety-related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.
  • Follows guidelines for safety with regards to contact precautions and all policies / procedures dealing with bloodborne pathogens.
  • Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost-effective manner.
  • Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations / statutes and company policies that impact the employee's area of responsibility.
  • If required for the position, ensures all certifications and / or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.
  • Completes all company mandatory modules and required job-specific training within the specified time frame.
  • Qualifications

    Education

    High School Diploma or GED- Required

    Certification & Licensures

    BLS - Required upon hire

    SGNA certification- Preferred

    Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.

    Experience

    2 years recent experience as Endoscopy Tech- Required

    Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
