Job Description
The Geotechnical Materials Section is seeking an advanced-level specialist to perform engineering related duties. This is a part-time position involving technical work with highway materials testing related to geotechnical engineering. This position rotates through different areas of the geotechnical materials section assisting professional / technical staff and participating in project activities and meetings.
Role and Responsibilities
- Perform field and / or laboratory soils and foundations testing in accordance with the applicable test methods such as Florida Sampling and Testing Method (FSTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Perform soils and earthwork testing that requires advanced skill or specialized training / qualification. Report results precisely in the appropriate database. Perform field testing for earthwork and foundation investigations. Monitor test parameters during testing to assess validity of the data. Perform advanced analytical analysis of results. Perform critical analysis of results to determine if retesting or resampling is required. Interpret results and provide findings to the Engineer. Analyze materials data for contract and procedural compliance.
- Perform delegated work assigned by the Engineer to facilitate the implementation of research findings. Perform evaluations of new products, equipment and practices. Assist in the material preparation and testing involved with the Test Pit research facility.
- Assist Geotechnical Engineers by developing training materials for the Earthwork Construction Training Qualification Program, Radiation Safety Program, and Laboratory and Field Testing Program.
- Inspect earthwork materials in the field as requested or required during Construction, Maintenance or Design. Determine material compliance with Department contract and procedural documents. Inspect and evaluate incoming geosynthetic samples from on-going construction projects to ensure the correct material is used for the correct application; this includes but not limited to testing of the physical sample, verification of proper documentation, and review of project requirements to confirm product meets the intended use. Provide feedback and technical assistance to field personnel as appropriate.
- Review Quality Control (QC) plans, construction plans, specifications, procedures and any other documents necessary to execute the Department’s mission. Provide clear comments as requested in time to be useful to the customer. Offer solutions when objecting to the approach that is proposed. Identify problem areas in specifications, procedures and test methods. Make written recommendations as to the proper resolution of these problems.

Qualifications
Knowledge of concepts, terminology, principles and analytical techniques of geotechnical and roadway earthwork operations.Knowledge of engineering design, construction, production and / or operations.Skilled in the use of computers including word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.Ability to analyze and interpret engineering data.Ability to solve problems relating to engineering.Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments and projects.Ability to communicate effectively.Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.Ability to use engineering tools, equipment, and / or instruments.Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
