As the only statewide radio and television broadcast network, MPB connects Mississippi households and communities. MPB programming focuses on the people, resources and attractions that reflect Mississippi's unique culture and diverse heritage. MPB provides a valuable resource to Mississippians in disseminating information as part of the state's emergency preparedness and response system. With live stream, on‑demand episodes of both radio and television favorites and the latest from MPB news, the MPB App provides listeners and viewers with a way to stay connected, no matter where in the world they may be. MPB reaches over 50,000 people a day through various social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. MPB's social channels provide information, news and entertainment around the clock, even in emergency situations.

About the Position :

The General Manager – Radio & News Operations is the driving force behind our station’s on‑air sound and journalistic impact. Reporting to the COO and CEO—and working in close collaboration with the Chief Content Officer—this role leads all aspects of radio and news programming, from big‑picture strategy to daily execution. The General Manager ensures our broadcasts and digital content are compelling, credible, and community‑focused, while fostering innovation, operational excellence, and a thriving team culture.

Key Responsibilities

Vision & Leadership

Set and execute the strategic direction for radio and news in alignment with the organization’s mission and growth goals.

Work hand‑in‑hand with the COO and CCO to develop engaging, relevant content across platforms.

Inspire and lead diverse teams to create programming that informs, connects, and resonates with audiences.

Operational Excellence

Oversee all radio and newsroom operations, ensuring top‑tier quality, efficiency, and compliance with FCC regulations.

Supervise and mentor department heads, fostering collaboration between programming, news, and digital teams.

Partner with technical staff to maintain reliable broadcast operations and pursue technology upgrades.

Content & Editorial Oversight

Safeguard the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness.

Shape programming and editorial direction to reflect the richness and diversity of our community.

Encourage innovative storytelling, audience engagement, and cross‑platform integration.

Financial & Administrative

Collaborate with the COO and finance team on budgets, resource allocation, and operational priorities.

Seek out opportunities for revenue growth through sponsorships, underwriting, and special initiatives.

Ensure operational decisions balance budget discipline with creative ambition.

Community & Industry Presence

Serve as a visible ambassador for the station at community events, conferences, and industry gatherings.

Build strong relationships with listeners, donors, community partners, and media peers.

Work with development and marketing teams to promote content and support fundraising.

What You'll Need to Be Successful

Proven success managing teams, budgets, and cross‑departmental initiatives.

Deep understanding of FCC rules, newsroom ethics, and public media principles.

Strong strategic planning, decision‑making, and communication skills.

Comfortable leading in fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments.

7+ years in leadership roles within radio, news, or public media.

Preferred Qualifications

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and seven (7+) years of experience. Applicants with degrees in the following fields will have preferred selection : Journalism, Communications, Broadcasting.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Paid Personal Leave and Sick Leave

Full‑time employees receive paid time off for personal needs and for sick leave. Leave begins accruing after one month of employment and may be used as it is accrued. Employees earn approximately 18 days of personal leave annually and 12 days of sick leave annually.

Military Leave

In accordance with federal law, all employees serving in the armed forces or the military reserves are entitled to 15 days per year for military training.

Holidays

Employees receive up to 10 paid holidays to enjoy many of our nation’s celebrations with family and friends.

Retirement Programs

The State of Mississippi provides all its employees a Defined Benefit / Defined Contribution Retirement Program. Employees become vested in the State’s retirement system after 8 years of employment.
