Provides comprehensive medical and surgical care focusing on the health of the reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and associated structures, across the lifespan of the patient.
The Gynecologist's duties cover preventative, diagnostic, and surgical aspects of pelvic health :
Preventative and Routine Care :
Conduct annual physical and pelvic examinations to maintain reproductive and sexual health.
Perform screening procedures, such as Pap tests and cervical cancer screenings.
Provide counseling on reproductive health, including contraception, fertility awareness, and STI prevention.
Diagnosis and Management :
Diagnose and medically manage conditions affecting the reproductive tract, such as infections, hormonal imbalances, and chronic pelvic pain.
Treat disorders of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, including but not limited to endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and uterine fibroids.
Manage transitions related to hormonal cycles, including the onset of menarche (first menstruation) and menopause.
Surgical Interventions :
Perform surgical procedures on the reproductive organs using both minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and open surgical techniques.
Conduct procedures such as hysterectomy, ovarian cyst removal, and repair of the pelvic floor (urogynecology).
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education & Training :
Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree.
Successful completion of a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Licensure & Certification :
Active, unrestricted state medical license.
Board Certification or Eligibility in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG or equivalent).
Key Skills : Expertise in surgical techniques, advanced diagnostic interpretation, compassionate communication regarding sensitive health topics, and critical decision-making.
