Evidence Technician I
The Stockton Police Department is looking to hire highly motivated and dedicated individuals who are interested in becoming part of the field investigative team. Successful applicants can expect to spend the majority of their time in the field and must be willing to work unusual and sometimes lengthy hours in order to complete the job at hand. The incumbent will work various shifts.
Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by the Stockton City Employees' Association Bargaining Unit. (Classified / Represented) This recruitment is being conducted as an Open / Promotional recruitment. Current full-time, regular status, at the time of application, City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both.
Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and drug screen.
Under general supervision, performs complex technical work related to the collection, processing, and preservation of crime scene evidence; performs related work as assigned.
Evidence Technician I is the entry-level class in this specialized police civilian class series and is distinguished from Evidence Technician II in that it is the training level where incumbents learn the basic tasks associated with crime scene investigations, including fingerprinting, lifting latent prints, photography, and evidence investigation and preservation. This class is alternately staffed and incumbents may advance to the higher level after successfully completing a one-year probationary period and gaining one additional year of experience and demonstrating proficiency that meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

Education / Experience : Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a forensic discipline or a degree in Criminal Justice with a forensic concentration. OR Possession of an Associate of Arts degree or completion of sixty semester units or equivalent quarter hours from an accredited college or university with major course work in a forensic discipline; and one (1) year of EITHER the handling of evidence and / or property in a law enforcement setting OR employment requiring the application of basic photographic skills. OR Possession of a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of EITHER the handling of evidence and / or property in a law enforcement setting OR employment requiring the application of basic photographic skills.

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date / time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
