Job Summary

Reporting to Senior Manager of Primate Veterinary Services and under general direction, provide all aspects of veterinary health care and preventive medicine care, which includes performing routine animal care rounds of emergency and critical animal care cases. Duties include : Oversee and coordinate workflow of assigned Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) including addressing their questions, providing any needed clinical support or technical training of care procedures, protocols, and making sure all of work is completed in accordance with CNPRC Animal Healthcare standards. Evaluate chronic metabolic cases such as diabetics, water restricted animals, kidney transplants, etc. as necessary. Perform all clinical procedures including skin grafts, radiographs, examinations, etc. File and document laboratory results and assist in the documentation and maintenance of medical problem lists, long-term outpatient records, and review hospital and out-patient records and radiology reports. Provide onsite shift hours and on call hours coverage as well as participating in research support activities. Review records for non-breeders as required by Research Services. Writes shift and case management summaries of both planned and unanticipated activities that occur during weekend shifts. Provide veterinary support services to research investigators, collaborating with research investigators in scientific research in the design, implementation, interpretation and communication of research projects. Perform management and / or supervisor-related tasks under the general direction of senior veterinary staff as assigned. Provide support and training to students, visiting veterinarians, UCD residents, rotating Lab Animal Medicine residents, and clinical veterinary technicians in all aspects of primate medicine. Oversee assigned pre-project / pre-shipment physical exams; review management areas and their cases (i.e., 20% weight loss, prolonged menses, chronic diarrhea, diet manipulation, etc.).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position

  • Licensed DVM in the state of California (or attain CA license within 6 months from date of hire). Board-certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Successful completion of a residency program in Laboratory Animal Medicine and Surgery.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM) from a recognized and accredited school of veterinary medicine.
  • Experience in medical primatology as it applies to the diagnosis, surgical procedures, and medical treatment of nonhuman primates.
  • Experience in preventive medicine programs required for laboratory housed non-human primates, including vaccination, parasitology, bacteriology and virology screening programs.
  • Experience in investigator project support including participation in experimental protocols, research design and laboratory-directed activities.
  • Experience addressing sensitive issues.
  • Experience in communications associated with the use of laboratory animals such as non-human primates in biomedical and translational research.
  • Knowledge of humane care and housing of animals with understanding of standards and guidelines as established by the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Applied experience of institutional, local, state, national and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of nonhuman primates (USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Endangered Species Act, FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulations, and California Public Health Law). Advanced clinical and surgical experience to apply veterinary medicine with large and small non-human primates. Experience to provide consultation to senior management and scientists through clear communication, and understand the needs of the individual scientists from diverse disciplines to ensure that their research needs are met.
  • Skills to provide effective feedback to all levels of students and AHTs that is constructive but not discouraging even when facing poor performance or lack of skills. Skill to teach in a classroom settings, seminar format, and on a one-to-one basis. Knowledge of gross necropsy procedures and basic histopathology of the nonhuman primates. Skills to communicate effectively, interpersonal and organizational skills to interact with a wide variety of individuals. Ability to interact with pathologists to identify patterns of disease in colony animals. Ability to interact with animal care staff and investigators regarding veterinary care. Ability to maintain and provide expert guidance and advice regarding care and use of non-human primates in research design and implementation. Skills to thrive in a deadline driven environment where attention to detail and superior organizational management skills are required for success. Must be equally comfortable working with quantitative and narrative data. Ability to stay up-to-date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine (primatology).

  • Department Overview

    The Professional Veterinary staff is responsible to provide veterinary medical services for in-patient and outpatient areas and includes over 5,000+ non-human primates housed at the California National Primate Research Center. Responsibilities are performed under general direction and include all aspects of health care and preventive medicine. Work includes providing veterinary support services to investigators. Perform management-related tasks under the general direction of departmental management. Provide support and training to students, visiting veterinarians, residents (primate, lab animal, zoo), and clinical veterinary technicians in all aspects of primate medicine. The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.

  • Sr. Staff Veterinarians provide health care services to nonhuman primates housed in 407,148 square feet in BSL 1 -3 animal spaces that include indoor housing, outdoor field corrals, outdoor corn crib housing, inhalation therapy, and animal testing space.Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. TB test or chest x-ray, measles vaccination or proof of illness is required prior to employment and annually thereafter.This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.Must be willing to perform assigned duties in a BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 facility where non-humans primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.Work on call, on a rotating basis incumbent is expected to carry pager and provide 24 hour / after hours veterinary coverage for on call emergencies.Adhere and comply with CNPRC Regulatory, Protocols, and SOPs and standards and Health & Safety policies.A strong service mentality and the ability to work well with many personalities and individuals from different cultures.A commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics, and assist in the promoting continuing education activities of professional and technical staff and resident and student veterinarians.California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.
