The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for leading and maintaining a robust occupational health and safety management system and ensuring the overall health and safety of all personnel. This role involves developing implementing and continuously improving health and safety protocols conducting risk assessments managing compliance with regulatory requirements and fostering a strong safety culture across the organization. This role requires exceptional communication and influencing skills to engage personnel at all levels and drive a prevention-focused safety mindset. The ideal candidate will be a proactive collaborative safety leader with a strong technical understanding of health and safety standards applicable to both construction and general industry.

WHAT YOULL BE DOING :

  • Provide technical and regulatory expertise to ensure compliance with legal requirements safe workplaces and continuous improvement of site health and safety programs.
  • Work with other health and safety experts in the organization on development of best practices and initiatives to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Participate in and facilitate project reviews incident investigations process hazard analyses and change management processes.
  • Support the interface with regulatory agencies and third parties as needed on compliance and enforcement issues while ensuring that all internal and external reporting requirements are met.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on health and safety topics develop training content and deliver training and / or coaching to employees contractors and visitors.
  • Work with the manufacturing team to develop solutions to problems and improve the integration of health and safety programs and process safety.
  • Participate / perform contractor safety orientation safety evaluations safe work permitting and incident investigations.
  • Conduct routine safety inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and non-compliance issues.
  • Coordinate completion of ongoing training and skills development for the site emergency response team which also functions as the site fire brigade.

WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR :

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in occupational health and safety emergency planning / response or process safety management.
  • Must have well-rounded knowledge of both construction and general industry health and safety standards regulations and best practices.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to successfully solve problems and influence others.
  • Proven leadership skills to champion and promote a strong safety culture in support of the organizations core values and maintaining permanent consistent compliance with legal and other requirements.
  • Competent in the use of computer applications used for health and safety monitoring and administration including Microsoft Office distributed control systems data historians document control software and management information systems.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documents policies standard operating procedures forms and related content.
  • OTHER QUALITIES WED LOVE FOR YOU TO HAVE :

  • Safety professional certification (ASP CSP CIH CHST etc.)
  • Experience working in an ISO 45001-certified occupational health and safety management system.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible work schedule as needed to support the needs of the business.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with a strong ability to work in close coordination with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Leadership skills that contribute to the overall success of the health and safety team and broader organization.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with multiple levels of the organization both individually and in a team environment.
  • Excellent influencing skills and the ability to drive the behaviors toward desired cultural norms.
  • Proven ability to educate and influence improving knowledge and capability of the entire organization related to health and safety principles regulations policies and procedures.
