This is a remote position.

The Veterans Affairs business unit helps transform the VA into a modern digital services organization where Veteran outcomes are at the center of every effort. We partner with the VA to design and deliver seamless user experiences for Veterans, their families and caregivers, and VA employees. By applying better practices in service design, product management, and technology, we enable the VA to increase the use, quality, and reliability of services and decrease the time Veterans spend waiting for outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities :

In this role, you will serve as an experienced individual contributor within a team, with the expectation that you will further develop your leadership, guidance and mentoring skills. With minimal oversight from leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule and delivery requirements. A Senior Data Engineer impacts the long-term goals of the program, while contributing to the development of the program's data strategy. You may serve as the discipline's primary lead when working with stakeholders and utilize strong influential skills to drive improvements in data processes and practices. Primary expectations of a Senior Data Engineer include :

  • Strong influential skills to propose and evaluate multiple approaches to technical and process problemsVisualizes, interprets, and reports data findings via dashboards (DataDog), reports, and charts that follow best practices; exhibits an understanding of UX implications associated with data visualization
  • Explains trends across data sources using statistical performance metrics to inform customer goals and outcomes
  • Understands and documents the full lifecycle of program data for a multidisciplinary program team
  • Gathers information from end users and program stakeholders to validate requirements and translate to a relevant data analysis
  • Analyzes, manipulates, cleans, and / or processes large data sets using statistical software languages
  • Participates in team working sessions, following and improving processes and workflows for maintaining high quality data and reporting
  • Drives product designs and flags impacts to data reporting capabilities based on a deep understanding of program data creation and transformations
  • Delivers optimal queries for the program through expertise, code reviews, training, etc
  • Advises on data model changes for the program
  • Develops and carries out investigations as needed, working with stakeholders and team on scope and plan
  • Practices technical and communications skills to improve context knowledge and mentor junior data analysts
  • Effectively communicates complex technical and business issues to both internal and external partiesFully understands and consistently implements data engineering best practices
  • Generates data architecture recommendations and demonstrates the ability to implement them
  • Actively mentors and assists more junior engineers in the development of their skills
  • Effectively communicates technical issues and developments with team members and clients
  • Participates in technical interviews with new candidates
  • Mentor and coach other data analyst on skills and development

Basic Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of experience
  • 2-3 experience with Microsoft Dynamics

  • Ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholder
  • Experience identifying and documenting integration points between tools and repositories
  • Experience aligning data availability with dashboarding and audit needs
  • Proficient in SQL, BI tools, and fluent in R, Python, APIs, JSON, etc.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge in at least one family of data ingestion systems, cloud database services, and visualization software
  • Expertise in key data concepts including constructing databases, processing big data, improving data accuracy, etc.
  • Preferred Qualifications : (Provide the nice to haves for this role; not having these will not disqualify the candidate)

  • Prior government contracting experience highly preferred; especailly working with the Department of Veteran's Affairs (VA)
  • Ability to create dashboards to explain data and present information to non data experienced stakeholder
  • Google analytics or other data tools
  • Experience working with various CRMs, improving CRMs
  • Ability to support front-end and back-end development tasks, as needed

    In support of various state and city equal pay transparency laws, Ad Hoc job descriptions feature the starting range we reasonably expect to pay to candidates who would join our team with little to no need for training on the responsibilities we've outlined above. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and responsibility.
