Job description

Wildland Firefighter (Fuels Management)

This Wildland Firefighter (Fuels Management) position is with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Western Region, Fort Apache Agency, Branch of Fire Management, located in Whiteriver, Arizona. This announcement will be used to fill vacancies utilizing the Direct-Hire Authority. Category rating, veteran's preference, and traditional rating and ranking of applicants do NOT apply for this vacancy.

Responsibilities include :

  • Directing and managing wildland fire, fuels management, and prescribed fire programs.
  • Ensuring compliance with state air quality standards for smoke management.
  • Reviewing existing prescription treatments, monitoring methods, and new technologies to improve fuels management effectiveness.
  • Assessing annual objectives and management direction to prepare treatment schedules for prescribed fire and fuels treatment projects.
  • Planning and conducting surveys to evaluate data for the development of fuels treatment prescriptions and wildland fire monitoring.
  • Conducting fuels management surveys to document presence, amount, and types of hazardous fuels.
  • Operating, moving, inspecting, and performing preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment for conducting surveys and field reconnaissance.
  • Exercising delegated supervisory authorities and responsibilities 15% of the time.

Requirements include :

  • Experience and education requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Minimum qualification standards for IFPM must be met prior to being placed into the position.
  • One year of specialized wildland fire management work experience equivalent to the GS-8 grade level.
  • Primary core qualification : Engine Boss (ENGB) or Crew Boss (CRWB) or Firing Boss (FIRB), or Helicopter Manager (HMGB) or higher.
  • Secondary core qualification : Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4) or higher.
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience is a mandatory prerequisite.
  • Special retirement coverage under FERS is contingent upon specific transfer and service requirements.
  • Physical demands include frequent physical exertion, walking over rough terrain, and working under occasionally inclement weather conditions.

    Work environment includes both office and field settings, with exposure to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions.
