Job Description

Are you striving to reach a new standard in your career? Do you have a passion for the built environment and are motivated by working with some of the best and brightest in the industry? We are seeking a creative, customer-centric Mechanical Systems Designer to work in a team environment to develop accurate and timely mechanical design drawings for our commercial and light industrial clients.

If you are interested in developing solutions to complex problems, then this position holds great challenge and reward. You will be working directly with professional engineers developing sustainable mechanical and plumbing solutions for buildings that define the Atlanta and Charlotte landscapes. Your efforts will directly result in exceptional levels of comfort and energy efficiency in the facilities of our extensive client base.

Fast forward one year, and you will be a key member on our team responsible for the assigned portion of the building mechanical scope and schedule. Your initiative and attention to detail will have you positioned as the lead mechanical designer for our construction teams responsible for delivering mechanical systems safely with speed, and quality. Bring your curiosity, passion for innovation, and expertise. We’ll help you grow, pursue, and fulfill what inspires you – so we can make big impacts on the industry, together.

WHO WE ARE

McKenney’s is a growing company with over 70 years of exceptional service to the Southeast. We operate in a performance-based environment with a fanatical focus on complete Customer Satisfaction and Doing The Right Thing. We view Integrity, Humility, Respect for Others, and Servant Leadership as non-negotiable traits for ourselves. Our aspirations include work/life balance, mentorship, encouragement of new ideas and creative solutions, and sending our people home the same way they came to work with a relentless focus on safety.

JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanical Systems Designer will work directly with members of our Engineering Team to prepare design and shop drawings aligned with McKenney’s drafting standards that support our design and construction teams. You'll prepare construction package drawings for HVAC, Mechanical Piping, and Plumbing for facilities, including dimensioned plans, sections, details, equipment schedules, and control diagrams. You’ll receive project assignments from the project lead engineer and work with field personnel, project managers, cooperative education students, and other CAD professionals to perform project-related tasks. We’ll lean on you to collaborate with related disciplines and designers from other disciplines to create high-quality multi-disciplinary drawing packages for issues to clients.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Utilize project criteria, applicable building and industry codes, McKenney’s CAD standards, and BIM execution plans (where applicable) to create accurate mechanical and plumbing drawings consistent with both company and project requirements.

· Create three-dimensional (and single-line/2D) CAD models of HVAC/sheet metal duct, piping, and plumbing systems for the purpose of design, coordination, and fabrication of said systems.

· Coordinate all duct, piping, and plumbing and access requirements with other building trades, walls, ceilings, other architectural and structural elements, etc., to avoid installation and access conflicts in the field.

· Work directly with engineers, co-op students, and other designers to accurately model HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems from verbal and written descriptions, sketches, existing drawings, and electronic images.

· Effectively and proactively communicate with engineers, project managers, and field foremen during the drafting and construction process. This includes identifying and communicating deficiencies/challenges with proposed solutions and scheduling progress on a timely basis (weekly at a minimum).

· Attend coordination meetings and communicate with other trades to develop highly coordinated models.

· Perform file management functions such as posting models, downloading model updates, managing links, and historic versions.

· Maintain design drawing standards for both AutoCAD® and Revit® platforms.

· Work with Senior Mechanical Designers or Superusers to create Revit families and content.

· Leverage Bluebeam® or other PDF editing software to produce drawings and backgrounds for design and/or as-built condition purposes.

· Maintain existing building drawing record file structure and ensure new drawings are saved in compliance with existing standards for future access.

· Train co-op students how to produce design drawings in compliance with department standards.

· Ensure design drawings produced by co-op students meet department standards.

· Use Company tools to manage requests for information and shop drawing progress.

· Work with the project manager and the field foreman to create As-Built condition drawings for projects.

· Produce all documents on time and within budget (estimated drafting hours) in a timely manner based on job requirements to meet commitments to our customers, both internal and external.

· Actively pursue self-development of skills as they relate to the duties of this job position.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED: (BASIC QUALIFICATIONS)

· Two-year technical or Associate's degree in Computer Aided Drafting/Construction Technology or similar.

· Minimum of 3 years working in a mechanical/plumbing trade or 3 years of design experience using Revit MEP 2018 or higher.

IDEALLY, YOU’LL ALSO HAVE: (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS)

· Experience with mechanical systems drafting using Autodesk Fabrication CADmep software.

· Ability to lay out and re-size mechanical ductwork, piping, plumbing, and similar activities.

· Ability to visualize three-dimensional layouts from two-dimensional drawings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND CHARACTERISTICS

· Desire to learn and understand mechanical and plumbing system design with a willingness to seek knowledge from others.

· Ability to read and interpret mechanical, architectural, and structural construction documents.

· Must be highly motivated, proactive, and willing to take on new challenges.

· Must have good follow-through and self-implemented quality control measures.

· Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet simultaneous deadlines. Flexible with work schedule and willing to work overtime if required to meet project requirements.

· Possess and maintain an exceptional work ethic, uphold company values, and demand the highest standard of conduct from self and others.

· Self-starter with a Positive Attitude and a sense of teamwork

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

· Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment.

· Work will require construction job site visits. This will require the physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs and ladders, passenger use of construction personnel hoists, and the ability to negotiate work areas under construction.

· Light physical effort handling average-weight objects up to 25 pounds may be required occasionally.

Moving Safety Forward, our initiative for continuous improvements in our safety culture, reminds us that we are on a journey toward a zero-incident culture. In all we do, we must work to build a partnership with our employees, customers and business associates that empowers them all with the ability to do their jobs safely.
