Departmental Overview

The Office of Environment, Health & Safety's (EH&S) mission is to provide guidance and services to the campus community that promote health, safety, and environmental stewardship.

EH&S is a highly dynamic, fast paced, committed organization focused on promoting workplace safety and environmental protection for the campus community. Position Summary

The EH&S Training Lead serves as the lead training and development incumbent to ensure that all EH&S required compliance training is appropriately developed and delivered to the campus community of faculty, staff, and students who conduct research, operate systems, support operation, and conduct the business of the University. Training is required by a variety of regulatory agencies, legal statuses, and legal settlements.

The position serves as the Administrator for the Learning Management System (LMS) EH&S sub-domain, and participates in UC systemwide training and development workgroups.

Responsibilities

Serves as the Training program lead and worklead, under direction of manager.

  • Prioritizes own work assignments and Training Team assignments.
  • Conducts complex and varied analysis of issues or concepts and develops resulting recommendations.

As Worklead, works with manager to set group priorities

  • Responsible for developing and facilitating of work processes and procedures associated with assigned functional lead role to meet campus or regulatory standards.
  • Directs, trains, and oversees the daily or project work and activities of a work team or individuals.
  • Assists supervisor, as needed, with prioritizing work for work group members.
  • Implement and lead work group meetings to enhance group performance.
  • Provides ongoing performance feedback to supervisor(s) of individual(s) in group.
  • As EH&S Training Lead

  • Works with the UC Learning Center Administrator to post courses to the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Serves as the custodian of EH&S training records.
  • Produce reports and training rosters as requested for regulatory or policy compliance.
  • Ensures EH&S training courses are compliant with Accessibility standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting training courses.
  • Maintains current knowledge of instructional design and development tools to improve work efficiency and training products.
  • Ensures training content is effective; establishes evaluation criteria for measuring desired results and impact.
  • Collaborates with and works in alignment with UC systemwide training resources and programs, and as needed, develops plans for campus launching and maintenance.
  • Applies advanced professional training and development skills to create and revise training content, resolve highly complex training issues, and assess training needs and initiatives.

  • Demonstrates judgment in selecting methods and techniques for delivering training.
  • Uses considerable discretion to consult with subject matter experts (SMEs) at EH&S and partner organizations to determine content for training courses, methods for training delivery, and effective use of technology, working with SMEs to determine online, in-person or hybrid training.
  • Works with SMEs to gather specifications for training content.
  • As appropriate to subject matter, provides in-person training to campus employees, departments, groups and teams, in tandem with SMEs or independently.
  • Coaches SMEs on training techniques, and coordinates in-person training logistics, i.e. scheduling, reserving classrooms, producing materials, and obtaining / providing equipment as needed.
  • Provides support to improve teaching and learning outcomes, and improved (training) performance.
  • Applies knowledge of culture to implement complex initiatives, projects and programs.
  • Develops new training programs and courses in response to organization's training needs.

  • Designs and conducts more complex training programs to address issues of diverse scope that are aligned with organization strategies.
  • Applies project and program management practices.
  • Conducts appropriate job and task analyses in the context of specialized needs analysis and evaluates effectiveness of training programs.
  • Creates and oversees the production of course content according to an established schedule.
  • Adapts system-wide or other training to the specific needs of the UC Berkeley community.
  • May provide support for testing content and tools to meet ADA requirements, research and document copyright for embedded media and other non-SME created content.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively in a diverse environment with others across the organization, important external contacts, and members of organization management (systemwide and at other UCs) at all levels to resolve highly complex performance and / or training issues, where analysis of situations requires an in-depth evaluation and understanding of organization strategies and business objectives.

    Staff development :

  • Works on professional committees and assignments, participates in professional training and attends relevant conferences, and / or is mentored or coached on a formal or informal basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to :

  • Completes and maintains compliance on campus / systemwide training requirements, as well as any training necessary per role.
  • At the request of campus management (EH&S Director, VC Administration / Research, UCPD Chief, or designated alternate), serve in a designate role within the EH&S Emergency Support Function and be on call to the campus Emergency Operations Center in a campus designated disaster or campus hazardous material release / threatened release. Provide appropriate emergency response role based upon expertise and, where applicable, designated departmental role.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Advanced analytical skills to conduct analyses and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of functional area and advanced understanding of how training programs impact other areas in the organization.
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional design, and training and delivery methodologies, organizational diagnosis, organization and business strategies, and current trends.
  • Advanced knowledge of accessibility requirements in instructional design and media development.
  • Advanced verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and advanced presentation skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with a variety of constituencies in a highly political environment.
  • Advanced skills in mentoring, supervising, or overseeing the work of other professional staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
  • Advanced skills in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective training delivery.
  • Advanced knowledge of training and development, performance management and workplace learning, and ability to apply knowledge to achieve successful organizational outcomes.
  • Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Articulate 360 and Rise, as well as other similar eLearning applications
  • Advanced skills in the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, After Effects, and Audition.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with text-to-speech applications.
  • Certificate in instructional design or equivalent.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $91,500.00 - $130,200.00, commensurate with experience.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours / week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
