Applicants must have previous police experience or have completed the police academy and obtained a P.O.S.T. certificate. Essential duties include patrolling assigned areas, enforcing traffic laws, conducting investigations, and providing first aid and emergency services.
The Police Officer is distinguished from the next higher class, which is a Police Sergeant or higher ranking officer. This class may also serve in special assignment capacities. The role requires general supervision from a Police Sergeant or higher ranking officer and may provide technical / training support for assigned officers.
Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, prior experience in law enforcement, and an associate's degree. A valid Class C California driver's license and a certificate of completion of a Basic Police Academy certified by California Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) are required. Sworn employees must possess a current and valid California POST Basic Certificate or have the ability to make application for Proof of Eligibility within 10 days of appointment.
The position requires physical and mental capabilities to perform various activities including sitting, standing, walking, running, lifting, and driving under normal and emergency conditions. It may involve working in hazardous situations, including exposure to blood-borne pathogens, and requires the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and split shifts.
