Under the supervision of the Technical Manager, the Formulation Chemist is responsible for researching, developing, and optimizing adhesives, sealants, and coatings. This role involves creating new formulations, improving existing products, and ensuring performance meets customer and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has a strong background in polymer chemistry and applied formulation science, with experience working in industries that demand high-performance materials.
Job Duties and Responsibilities :
- Develop, formulate, and optimize new adhesives, sealants, and coatings for industrial and aerospace / defense applications.
- Improve existing product lines to enhance performance, processing, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance.
- Select raw materials and evaluate new technologies to meet performance specifications.
- Conduct laboratory experiments, prototype evaluations, and application testing to validate formulations.
- Scale-up formulations from lab to pilot to full-scale production, working closely with manufacturing teams.
- Generate and maintain technical documentation, including formulations, specifications, test reports, and safety data.
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications, industry standards (ASTM, MIL-SPEC, AMS, etc.) and environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Provide technical support to production, quality, and customers regarding product performance and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Supply Chain, Sales, and Quality, to meet project objectives and timelines.
- Stay current with industry trends, competitive technologies, and emerging raw material innovations. - There is plenty of room in the lab, with 3 fume hoods, and lots of bench space, this role could also be in line for the profit-sharing plan.
Technical Qualifications :
BS in Chemistry or Polymer, ideally with some formulations skills of 1 year or more, or formal training in such in college.Key chemistries include Epoxy, PU, Silicones, PolysulfidesKnowledge of formulation chemistry is KEY – can be from coatings, adhesives, or even cosmeticsSomeone who is eager to learn, curious, attentive to details, and can work independently and takes direction wellExcellent communication skills and the ability to work independently
