Fire Inspector

The City of Lewiston is seeking a dedicated Fire Inspector to help protect lives and property by ensuring fire codes and safety standards are met. In this role, you'll work directly with businesses, property owners, and the community to prevent fire risks before they happen. Under the direction of the Division Chief of Prevention, performs inspections of public and commercial construction, buildings, operations, events and premises to enforce and ensure compliance with fire prevention laws, ordinances and codes of the City of Lewiston, the State of Idaho and nationally recognized standards; investigates fires to determine origin and cause and when necessary collects evidence, questions suspects and witnesses and pursues prosecution of suspected cases of arson; promotes the development and use of effective fire prevention methods; conducts fire prevention programs and provides education and instruction to the general public regarding fire codes, prevention, and fire and life safety.

Reviews building plans, fire protection systems, and subdivision plans for code compliance Conducts project reviews of proposed plans for code requirements, occupancy classifications, fire flow requirements, etc. Conducts inspections of site and building elements and systems to ensure compliance with approved plans Conducts detailed fire and safety inspections of high-risk commercial and industrial facilities Trains and assists fire crews in matters related to building construction and fire protection systems Reviews hazardous materials, administrative and site development plans for code compliance Reviews applications and performs inspections for new business licenses Provides fire code compliance support to other city departments Prepares and maintains activity records and special reports Assists with public relations and conducts public education programs to promote fire safety in the city Conducts final inspections and testing of new construction, remodels, tenant improvements, etc. Conducts fire investigations in accordance with the IFC and NFPA 921 Participates in development / construction meetings Reviews blasting plans for compliance with City ordinance, issues blasting permits and monitors blasting operations Reviews fireworks vendor applications and conducts fireworks license inspections for sales and storage applicants and pyrotechnic displays Work with code enforcement officer regarding fire hazards Performs other related duties as required

  • This is a safety sensitive position and requires random drug and alcohol testing.

Minimum Qualifications : High school diploma or GED equivalency; Three (3) years of experience in fire prevention, fire investigations and / or fire inspection work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work is preferred. The following licenses and certification are required :

  • ICC Fire Inspector I certification or equivalency Required to apply
  • ICC Fire Inspector II (within 12 months of employment)
  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner certification (by the end of the 5

  • National Fire Academy : Fire / Arson Origin & Cause Investigation or equivalency Required to apply
  • Complete one CFI 35 credit hour program per month for the first 24 months of employment; and quarterly thereafter
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • Knowledge & Abilities :

    Knowledge : Fire Department organization International fire, building, residential, mechanical, and electrical codes Idaho Fire Code, City Ordinances and multiple NFPA standards Fire hazards and prevention requirements, inspection procedures Firefighting techniques, procedures, and equipment Fire Department Standard Operating Procedures and firefighting equipment and techniques Hazardous materials storage, use, handling and plan review (explosive, flammable, combustible, caustic, corrosive, cryogenic and other hazardous materials) The principles and practices of fire origin and fire cause investigations Arson investigations, investigative case preparation and court testimony Blasting techniques and operations Fire behavior and its relationship to buildings, materials and operations Human behavior during a catastrophic event Historical issues relevant to local structures and their development / construction Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications Interpersonal skills Oral and written communication skills Abilities : Work both alone and in a team environment under extremely stressful situations Prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations Inspect businesses, buildings and facilities to assure compliance with fire codes, laws and ordinances Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing codes, information and / or technology Read, learn, explain and enforce the International Fire Code, NFPA Standards, International Building Code, and other Federal, State, County and City codes and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and life safety Attend training, which may require extended time away and travel on weekends and / or evenings, complete trainings successfully Learn and correctly apply routine division and department policies and procedures Organize and analyze evidence utilizing the scientific method in accordance with industry standards to determine the origin and cause of fires Prepare department reports in a clear and understandable manner Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other governmental agencies, subordinates, developers, contractors and the public Operate a computer and use program applications appropriate to assigned duties Use appropriate safety tools, personal protective equipment (PPE) and apparatus for fire investigations Communicate with and evaluate juvenile fire setters and their families Prioritize and schedule work Manage time proficiently Work with other agencies (ATF, police, State Health, State Fire Marshal, insurance representatives and other fire departments) to achieve a common goal

    Working Conditions : Indoor and outdoor work environment; subject to working on roofs, in crawl ways, in adverse weather conditions and in fire-damaged structures; emergency call-outs; driving to conduct work. Physical activities include dexterity of hand and fingers to operate all types of monitoring and office equipment; climbing, crawling, stretching, walking and standing for long periods of time; bending, pulling, pushing, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds; physical agility and stamina, and reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally; seeing to operate vehicles and equipment, and to observe and investigate fires; and speaking and hearing to communicate with victims and firefighting personnel in a highly stressful atmosphere and to communicate and perform public presentations. Incumbents may be exposed to extreme heat and flames, toxic smoke, fumes and gases, chemicals and hazardous materials, flammable liquids, high voltage, working at heights, working within cramped or restrictive chambers, and working with angry and / or abusive individuals. Ability to enforce the code reasonably, fairly and above all, consistently.
