Description :
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates / residents.
The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of his / her education and licensure.
He / She applies appropriate nursing skills in the area and treatment of inmates / residents.
The RN attends sick call with the physician to see inmates / residents, preparing a list of inmates / residents for examination and preparing examining rooms and equipment.
He / She operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
The RN calls the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and addresses other emergencies.
He / She examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries and refers them to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as needed.
The RN performs emergency procedures as necessary and notifies the Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
He / She assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures that their needs are addressed.
The RN monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
He / She provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
The RN maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
He / She utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures in making decisions while exercising sound independent judgment.
The RN regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services.
He / She maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
The RN assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.
He / She closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
The RN audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary, as directed or required.
He / She complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
The RN observes and records inmate / resident behavior.
He / She inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates / residents and securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
The RN provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required.
He / She assists in preparing and maintaining various standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs, using appropriate grammar.
The RN processes all reports and documents in a timely manner.
He / She reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal and non-legal documents.
The RN reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits as necessary and attends court hearings when required.
He / She facilitates, where applicable, accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved medical services.
The RN prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures while taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
