Overview
Maintenance Worker I / II in the City of Cupertino, Public Works Department. Under direct or general supervision, performs a variety of skilled maintenance work in construction, modification, maintenance, repair, and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, trees, right of way, grounds, fleet, and other City facilities. Uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment; performs related work as assigned.
The current recruitment is to fill vacancies in Trees & Right-of-Way, Grounds and Facilities Divisions. The City currently has the following number of vacancies in each of the Divisions :
Positions will be filled at the I or II level, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidates selected. An eligible list will be established to fill future vacancies.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direct or general supervision from the Maintenance Lead or the Public Works Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to assigned staff.
Class Characteristics
Maintenance Worker I — entry-level class in the public works maintenance series. Under close supervision, incumbents learn City infrastructure, systems, and facilities; use of tools and equipment; and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and complex and may be performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most duties of the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level.
Maintenance Worker II — full journey-level class in the public works maintenance series. Performs full range of duties to maintain City infrastructure, systems, and facilities in a safe and effective condition, and to provide safety for public use. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas and performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair tasks. Positions at this level are distinguished from I by independence and judgment. Maintenance Worker II may perform the most complex duties and is fully aware of operating procedures and policies. This class is flexibly staffed with II normally filled by advancement from I after meeting qualifications and demonstrating ability to perform higher-level work.
Positions in this series are flexibly staffed; II-level positions are normally filled by advancement from I after gaining necessary knowledge, skills, and experience, and after demonstrating ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

Specific Assignments
Street maintenance — Performs construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets and roadways to ensure safe access, including alleys, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, roadway base / sub-base, guard rails, asphalt, crack sealing, concrete repair, traffic / street sign installation and reflectivity, and pavement markings. Installs and maintains traffic signs and posts; fabricates / repairs signs; performs legend painting and striping.
Performs inspection, maintenance, and repair of City storm drain systems and facilities (including concrete channels, creeks, pipes, drains, detention basins, drop inlets); operates jackhammer and concrete work; ensures safety compliance.
Trees & Right of Way — Maintains trees and shrubs (pruning, removal), maintains right-of-way hardscapes and irrigation systems; operates aerial and other tree equipment; installs / maintains median improvements and plantings; performs grounds tasks and traffic control as required; responds to emergency clean-up requests; ensures safety compliance.
Grounds — Performs landscape, turf, park, and sports field maintenance (litter removal, graffiti abatement, sweeping, mulching, planting, mowing, fertilizing, IPM); installs / maintains irrigation systems; repairs facilities and equipment; inspects premises for graffiti; operates grounds tools and equipment; maintains logs.
Facilities and Fleet — Performs routine maintenance of municipal facilities including carpentry, painting, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and security systems; custodial duties; secures and monitors facilities; reports safety hazards; assists other departments; fuels equipment; maintains vehicles and equipment; installs warning / beacons and minor electrical devices; performs parts delivery and service calls; cleans / maintains City vehicles and equipment.
All assignments — Inspects infrastructure for safety issues; operates varied equipment; follows safety practices; maintains clean work and storage areas; sets up traffic control for work zones; mentors or assists new employees; maintains logs; participates in emergency repairs; follows department policies; performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of : Basic principles, practices, tools, and materials related to municipal maintenance; basic mathematics; safe driving; basic computer software; English usage and spelling; customer service practices.
Maintenance Worker II additions — principles / practices for maintaining streets / roads, stormwater / drainage systems, traffic control, operation / maintenance of hand and power tools, equipment, and safety protocols; applicable laws / codes / regulations.
Ability to : Perform basic construction / modification / maintenance / repair; troubleshoot and specify materials; read drawings / blueprints / maps; perform arithmetic; safely operate tools and equipment; maintain records; follow instructions; organize work and meet deadlines; communicate effectively; establish positive working relationships.
II-specific abilities — perform construction / maintenance on streets and roadways and related systems; locate underground utilities; interpret manuals / blueprints; work with policies and regulations; set up traffic control; operate various equipment; use independent judgment within guidelines.
Education and Experience
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path :
Maintenance Worker I and II : Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Maintenance Worker I : One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, or repair of streets / roadways, stormwater / drainage, sanitation, trees, traffic signs, automotive facilities, etc.
Maintenance Worker II : Three (3) years of experience in the same scope, or two (2) years as Maintenance Worker I at Cupertino. HVAC, electrical, plumbing experience highly desirable for both levels.
Licenses and Certifications
Maintenance Worker I / II : Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license by time of appointment.
Maintenance Worker II : Desirable certifications depending on assignment (streets, trees / ROW, grounds, facilities, fleet) including IMSA Roadway Signs / Markings Level I & II, Work Zone Safety, Class B license, QAC, ISA Certified Tree Worker, and others listed in the original posting.
Additional licenses may include QAC (categories depending on assignment), Backflow Prevention Tester certification, HVAC / R certifications, ADA fleet certifications, and Class A / B licenses where relevant.
Physical Demands
Mobility to work in the field; ability to perform medium to heavy physical work; climb / descend ladders; operate tools and equipment; vision / hearing; lift up to 50 pounds or more with assistance; operate in various environments.
Environmental Elements
Work in field with exposure to noise, weather, road hazards, chemicals, and industrial hazards; interaction with staff, public, and contractors.
Working Conditions
On-call may be required; varied shifts or emergencies including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
