Position description

University of California, Riverside School of Medicine, is recruiting five faculty members at the rank of Assistant Professor to participate in THRIVE Scholar Program. UCR School of Medicine commits to recruit, hire, and retain a cohort of five new full time faculty members engaged in clinical health equity research and / or education who have demonstrated an enhanced commitment and contribution to addressing and correcting health disparities in medicine, a goal integral to the School of Medicine's mission and larger commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

THRIVE at UCR SOM aims to advance health equity efforts and improve care for the most medically underserved region in the state of California, the Inland Empire, by supplementing current UC Riverside School of Medicine initiatives to improve the recruitment of clinical faculty engaged in health equity research / education, enhance their retention, and support the advancement of their clinical health equity research and / or education. The goal of this initiative is to build a population of UCR clinical faculty members that have experience with and will continue advancing clinical health equity research and / or education to successfully improve healthcare outcomes in the Inland Empire. THRIVE at UCR SOM will supplement current schoolwide initiatives to diversify clinical faculty members (both Academic Senate and non-Academic Senate) as part of continued efforts to achieve concordance with the demographics of the medical student body, as well as the population demographics of the Inland Empire. The UCR School of Medicine mission is to improve the health of the medically underserved in Inland Southern California by addressing health disparities that are exacerbated by underrepresentation of historically marginalized identities in the physician workforce.

Benefits of the THRIVE Scholar Program at UCR SOM

  • Each of the five newly recruited clinical faculty members will be provided protected time for work which may include health equity research, clinical education, community health outreach, mentorship and advising for pathway programs, anti-oppressive curriculum review, and other approved initiatives.
  • Developmental funds for educational and / or experiential opportunities related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion work in their respective fields will be available.
  • Cohort-based educational programming and professional development opportunities, including guaranteed acceptance into the UCR School of Medicine's prestigious year-long Teaching Excellence Academy.
  • Access to workshops from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on topics including, but not limited to : LGBTQ inclusive care, the art of effective mentorship, bias in academic medicine, confronting patient-initiated discrimination, science-based approaches to developing a supportive educational culture, and more.
  • Longitudinal mentorship and transition support with a provided faculty mentor within their specialty / field of study.
  • Support from a dedicated THRIVE Scholar Program research mentor, Dr. Michelle Porche, Director of Clinical Faculty Research Development and Scholarly Activity at UCR SOM, to support the development of manuscripts for peer review and grant proposal development.
  • Schoolwide visibility as a THRIVE Program Scholar.
