Position: Upholsterer 1

Department: Facilities

Job Summary: Performs upholstery work, such as the repair and replacement of damaged or worn upholstery. This is the first in a series of three (3) classifications. Incumbents are supervised closely and generally do not make independent decisions or judgments.

Duties and Responsibilities (specific areas of responsibility include but are not limited to):

  • Inspects, repairs, rebuilds, and re-covers damaged or worn upholstery furniture such as chairs and booths; may also construct some pieces.
  • Repairs or replaces gaming table covers per department specifications.
  • Repairs furniture frames and refinishes exposed wood.
  • Examines frames, upholstery, springs, and webbing to locate defects.
  • Removes covering, webbing, padding, and/or defective springs from pieces, using appropriate tools.
  • Adjusts or replaces webbing, padding, and/or springs, and secures them in place.
  • Sews tears or rips with needle and thread.
  • Attaches bindings or applies solutions to edges of cut material to prevent raveling.
  • Pulls tacks or staples from defective upholstery using appropriate tools, and removes upholstery from frame; tacks, sews, or staples replacement upholstery to frame.
  • Attaches fasteners, grommets, buttons, buckles, ornamental trim, and other accessories to covers or frames, using appropriate tools.
  • Builds furniture up with loose fiber stuffing, cotton, felt, and/or foam padding to form smooth rounded surfaces.
  • Draws cutting lines on material following patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints, using items such as chalk and pencils.
  • Fits, installs, and secures material on frames, using appropriate tools.
  • Interweaves and fastens strips of webbing to the backs and undersides of furniture, using small hand tools and fasteners.
  • Stretches webbing and fabric, using webbing stretchers.
  • Operates a sewing machine to join cut fabric parts to fabricate upholstery coverings.
  • Cuts coverings from bolts of cloth, using part removed as pattern; takes defective parts to designated staff to have replacement parts cut to specifications.
  • Accomplishes a variety of finishing work by cutting, gluing, installing foam padding and reading measurements; performs other finish work as needed.
  • Picks up and delivers furniture.
  • Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies to be able to respond to work requests in a timely manner.
  • Consults with supervisor on projects and priorities.
  • Performs all functions in accordance with departmental as well as the Gaming Enterprise Division’s (GED) policies and procedures.
  • Works with other team members to complete assigned tasks, as necessary.
  • Operates hand and power tools in a safe, efficient manner to accomplish assigned duties.
  • Performs mathematical calculations; understands and uses drawings to fulfill duties, when necessary.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas throughout the shift practicing clean-as-you-go procedures.
  • Follows established safety and security policies and procedures including reporting accidents, injuries, and unsafe working conditions immediately to a supervisor.
  • Performs all functions in accordance with departmental and the GED’s policies and procedures.
  • Attends periodic departmental and GED meetings; attends professional and personal development training programs.
  • Displays a diplomatic, polished, and professional demeanor in the workplace.
  • Ensures uniform and personal appearance is clean and professional.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic upholstery repair.
  • Knowledge of equipment, products, techniques, and standards used in the upholstery trade.
  • Knowledge of common hand and power tools used in the upholstery trade.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook software.
  • Skill in caring for and using hand and power tools as well as other job-related tools used to perform tasks.
  • Organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining good working relationships.
  • Ability to setup and operate upholstery equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate as well as understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with team members.
  • Ability to wear protective equipment for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Ability to use a tape measure or other measuring device; ability to perform mathematical and geometric computations pertaining to the position.
  • Ability to read and use graphic instructions such as schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids as well as interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions.
  • Ability to distinguish the full range of colors in the color spectrum and align intricate designs in fabrics.
  • Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  • Ability to work in a smoking environment.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, noise, and fumes.
  • Ability to lift and carry over forty (40) pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, pull, kneel, crouch and/or reach objects above shoulder height.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six months basic upholstery repair experience OR vocational certificate as an Upholsterer.
  • Must successfully pass a written and performance exercise.
  • Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Must be able to withstand exposure to dust, noise, and fumes.
  • Must be able to lift and carry over forty (40) pounds, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, pull, kneel, crouch and/or reach objects above shoulder height.
  • Must not be allergic to chemicals, solvents, paints, adhesives, natural or manmade materials, fabrics, or feathers.
  • Must be able to work in a smoking environment.
  • Must be able to work any shift, weekends, holidays, special events, and overtime, as needed.

  • High school or General Equivalency Diploma.
