Job description

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Counseling, School Psychology and Sport (CSPS) in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Massachusetts Boston to begin September 1, 2026. Specifically, we seek an innovative and equity-minded scholar who will engage in research excellence and continue integrated scholarship efforts that draws from multiple disciplines (e.g., counseling psychology, mental health counseling, school psychology, and/or sport) and harnesses innovative ideas to shape evidence-based solutions benefiting individuals in high-need and urban communities. In this position we also seek an individual with a demonstrated interest in community-engaged research that will advance our college mission and the commitments outlined in our university strategic plan (page 11).

Preferred qualifications include one or more of the following: 1) Demonstrated teaching and leadership experience with socio-culturally diverse populations; 2) a record or promise of high research productivity, including collaborative, interdisciplinary community-engaged scholarship, that supports our departmental mission; 3) successful and engaged undergraduate and/or graduate teaching experience with inclusive approaches for supporting student learning and development.

This faculty position is located within the PhD Program in Counseling Psychology and will also support the MS in Mental Health Counseling, and the Ph.D. program in Counseling and School Psychology. Preference will be given to applicants with assessment experience and/or qualifications for teaching social psychology or other core psychology courses.

Responsibilities for this position include: 1) teaching core graduate courses in counseling psychology, mental health counseling, and clinical supervision of field experiences in counseling psychology and mental health counseling; 2) conducting research that is relevant to the field of counseling psychology; 3) advising doctoral students and serving on dissertation committees; and 4) contributing service to university, college, departmental, and program committees, to professional associations, and to local, national, and/or international communities. The College recognizes that the scholarly work of faculty often includes the integration of teaching, research, and service. The position also offers opportunities for collaboration with UMass Boston’s Collaborative of Asian American, Native American, Latino, and African American Institutes (CANALA - UMass Boston).

Required Qualifications: An earned doctorate from an APA-accredited Counseling Psychology Program and Master’s from an Accredited Counseling or Mental Health Program or related field. Licensed or license-eligible as a Licensed Psychologist/Health Services Provider in Massachusetts.

The Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program is housed in the Counseling, School Psychology, and Sport (CSPS) department. CSPS includes two APA-accredited doctoral training programs (Counseling Psychology, School Psychology), MPCAC-accredited master’s programs in school counseling and mental health counseling, NASP-accredited master’s and Ed.S. programs in school psychology, a graduate program in Applied Behavior Analysis, and a B.A. in Sport Leadership and Administration.

The College of Education and Human Development at UMass Boston is ranked the top public college of education in the state of Massachusetts (U.S. News and World Report, 2025) and is guided by our core values of social justice, community engagement and academic excellence.

UMass Boston is an urban public research university with a teaching soul, whose impact is both local and global. We are the third most diverse university in the country - more than 60% of our undergraduate students come from minoritized communities and groups and more than half of our students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. Thus, our students come to us from richly diverse life experiences and backgrounds; they bring to our classrooms and research settings the robust range of perspectives growing out of the socio-cultural, economic, and historical contexts in which they have lived, along with the challenges they encounter, engage, and strive to overcome. We invite applications from candidates who reflect the diverse life experiences of our student body, who appreciate that students bring their holistic selves into the academic setting, and who recognize and articulate how their own life experiences and backgrounds have shaped their journeys, practices, and commitments as researchers, scholars, and educators.

Applications: Please submit the following materials through the application portal here: https://hr.umb.edu/jobs. The materials include: (a) cover letter including a statement of research, teaching and leadership experience, as well as approach to supervision and how they advance our college mission (b) curriculum vitae; (c) names and contact information for five professional references; and (d) representative publications. For questions, please contact the Search Chair: Sharon Horne, Ph.D. ().

UMass Boston expects to pay within an approximate range between $80,000 and $85,850 for this position.

The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on the consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. Exceptional candidates may be considered for salaries above the published range to ensure competitiveness within the academic market.

UMass Boston is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, we will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations for the hiring process. If reasonable accommodation is needed, please contact or 617-287-5150.
