Position Summary : Dispense drugs prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and provide information and education to patients about medications and their use. Advise physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosage, interactions, and side effects of medications.

Essential Functions :

  • Receive written, oral prescriptions, e-scribe or refill requests and verify that information is complete and accurate, ascertain the needed ingredients, and evaluate their safety for intended patient.
  • Process prescription orders, process insurance claims, and count / fill medications as necessary.
  • Assess the identity, strength, or purity of medications and maintain proper storage and security conditions for all medication per Federal Regulations.
  • Answer phone calls and respond to questions or requests.
  • Oversee daily functions of pharmacy technicians to ensure accuracy in preparing / filling prescriptions.
  • Dispense / verify medications prescribed by calculating, weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients, as necessary.
  • Monitor drug therapies and evaluate for quality, effectiveness of drugs, drug interactions and contraindications.
  • Assist with clinical inquiries and provide clinical medication advice to Medical Providers, including interpreting lab values and cultures and sensitivities to recommend best medication for clinical diagnosis.
  • Collaborate with other health care professionals to plan, monitor, review, or evaluate the quality or effectiveness of drugs or drug regimens, providing advice to maximize therapeutic outcomes.
  • Conduct DUR (data utilization review) by reviewing patient medical histories to prevent duplication of therapy or drug interactions.
  • Provide medication education and counseling, offering information and advice to patients regarding medications and their correct usage, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
  • Update patient profiles, demographic and insurance information, including lists of medications.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all patients.
  • File controlled substance prescriptions and invoices per Federal regulation requirements.
  • Monitor billing and records such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, inventories, narcotics program, etc. to ensure compliance with Federal regulations.
  • Plan, implement, maintain, and ensure compliance with procedures for mixing, packaging, or labeling pharmaceuticals, according to policy and Federal legal requirements, to ensure quality, security, and proper disposal.
  • Advise patients on the selection of medication brands, medical equipment, or healthcare supplies.
  • Communicate with insurance carriers, Providers and external pharmacies and assist with internal and external audits as needed.
  • Assist in inventory management including ordering, receiving, and managing stock levels.
  • Run various pharmacy reports and patient medication lists for providers, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Providers and other departments in optimizing patient care.
  • Participate in various educational programs and health related projects.
  • Complete prior authorizations for any medications written by providers that are not covered by patient’s insurance.
  • Conduct MTM (Medication Therapy Management) session with patients in accordance with Medicaid / Medicare regulations, documenting all necessary information in EMR.
  • Assist in updating Antimicrobial Stewardship Gide.
  • Collaborate with Providers in any additional clinical tasks or medical research they request.
  • Attend meetings and join committees upon request of supervisor (Compliance, QI / QA, P&T, etc.)
  • Conduct quarterly peer reviews for Behavioral Health.
  • Maintain CDTM (Collaborative Drug Therapy Management) agreement with medical providers, allowing pharmacists to approve refills and provide therapeutic substitutions, as necessary.
  • Assist in obtaining random oral drug screenings from patients.
  • Reconcile reimbursement checks from insurance companies.
  • All pharmacists may also need to provide the overall direction, coordination, evaluation, coaching, and development of staff. This includes interviewing, hiring, orienting, and training employees. Planning, assigning, and directing work. Providing timely feedback, appraising performance and providing professional development opportunities, and rewarding and disciplining employees. Proactively address and resolve staff concerns and explore and implement methods and procedures for improving departmental workflow and service to Tribal Citizens.
  • Community Clinic Pharmacists are required to manage day to day operations, oversee staff, order supplies, and create monthly and annual reports.

Non-Essential Functions :

  • Systems used : MS Office Applications, Internet, Computer Rx, Surescripts, Electronic Medical Records.
  • Position Requirements :

  • Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree required. Degree must be from an accredited institution whose program of study has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.
  • Must be a licensed Pharmacist with five (5) years of experience is preferred
  • Proficiency with MS Office Applications preferred.
  • Ability to alleviate stress and anxiety and be supportive of persons. Work tactfully, collaboratively, diplomatically and with highest level of confidentiality required.
  • Strong sense of service and good communication skills, both oral and written required.
  • Experience working with Native American communities preferred.
  • Clear demonstration of leadership abilities required.
  • For Community Clinic Pharmacists, an additional two (2) years of supervisory experience is preferred.

  • Physical Requirements :

  • Work is generally standing and walking but may allow for occasional sitting.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment / count product.
  • Frequently required to talk and hear.
  • Work Environment :

  • General office environment. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.
