Job description

Overview

The School Library Information Specialist-Secondary will serve as an integral team member in the school community as a leader, teacher, technology integration coach, and information specialist. Responsible for creating a collaborative learning environment for students that nurtures creative problem solving; empowering students to become critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information; and anticipating future obstacles and continually evolving to meet challenges. Works as an instructional partner with teachers and other educators to build and strengthen connections between student information and research needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and information resources. Provides leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of technology resources in all formats, as well as expertise in the ethical use of information.

  • CONTRACT TYPE : CONTINUING
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE : 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR
  • POSITION REQUIREMENT : This position requires a Washington State Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Endorsement to teach in the content area advertised in this posting. The Professional Education Standards Board (PESB), can provide additional endorsement requirement information through their site;

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a collection of culturally relevant digital and print resources appropriate to the curriculum, learners, teaching styles and instructional strategies of the school community, for purposes of promoting independent reading, research, and literacy growth.
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, effective users of technology, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, ethical users of information and ideas.
  • Maintain an active and vibrant library learning space that encourages collaboration, innovation, and creativity.
  • Model, facilitate and inspire a love of learning in students and staff.
  • Provide instruction to students based on the Washington State Educational Technology Standards and American Association of School Library Standards.
  • Use a variety of techniques and methodologies appropriate for student abilities while promoting high levels of achievement and ensuring equitable access to information and library resources.
  • Incorporate modern technology for subject matter learning engagement and relevance for purposes of enhancing student learning outcomes.
  • Inside of a coaching cycle, participate in the implementation of collaboratively planned lessons, by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress and evaluating activities.
  • Engage in diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments of student learning.
  • Ensure students and staff are effective users of a wide variety of informational resources and technology tools.
  • Collaborate with teachers to design and teach engaging lessons and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking; including assisting staff in the selection, evaluation, and use of Internet-based and digital resources.
  • Participate in the curriculum development process at both the school and district level that meets the full range of literacy and technology skills necessary to meet state and AASL standards and develop lifelong learners.
  • Provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program is aligned with state, ISTE, and AASL standards as well as the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and school district, and is an integral component of the instructional program.
  • Plan and provide professional development opportunities in the use of new technologies and school library services within the school and / or district for staff, including other library information specialists.
  • Collaborate with and coach staff members in innovative and comprehensive use of school and educational technologies integrated into units of instruction and for purposes of assessing student learning and determining instructional effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with other libraries, librarians, and wider community to provide access to resources beyond the school library.
  • Model and promote digital citizenship and personal responsibility
  • Produce school library reports, budget requests, bibliographies and other documents related to the functional operations of the school library
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building / program administrator.
  • Qualifications

  • Qualifies for a valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements of Secondary History or ELA.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and ability to use research-based principals of effective instruction.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning.
  • Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals, and provides an environment conducive to learning.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to use research-based principals of effective instruction.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward self-discipline.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet those needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional skills.
  • Sets and attains high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources in a way that accomplishment occurs.
  • Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through modeling appropriate demeanor, behavior, and attire.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn new ideas and skills and for solving problems; the possession of a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 is expected. (This requirement may be waived if an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants for a specific position exists.)
  • Knowledge and ability to implement current educational developments and applications, works collaboratively with others, believes in the importance of education, and interested in the welfare of all students.
  • Uses democratic processes to work out problems in a supportive and understanding nonauthoritarian manner.
  • Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record-keeping activities.
  • Develop and maintain an expertise related to current Washington State Educational Technology Standards and American Association of School Library Standards.
  • Knowledge of copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property and ability to assist students, staff, and administration with their understanding and observance of the same.
  • Collection management skills specific to maintaining an online catalog and automated circulation system that accurately reflects the collection and its usage, including establishment and adherence to processes and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, to ensure resources are available as needed.
