Full-Time | Monday - Friday; Saturday - rotational; Weekend and evening hours are required.

Library Hours

Monday : 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Tuesday : 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Wednesday - Friday : 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Saturday : 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Sunday : Closed

Person County Government is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and service-oriented Deputy Library Director to join the leadership team at the Person County Public Library. This key leadership role supports the Library Director in the overall administration, supervision, and advancement of library services, programs, and operations. The Deputy Library Director plays a vital role in shaping the library's mission to serve the community through inclusive, accessible, and forward-thinking services. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with a passion for public service, strong technical expertise, and a commitment to community engagement.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.

Must possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.

This is an exempt position working 37.5 hours weekly / 1950 hours annually.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Library Director with planning and implementing the Library's Strategic plan, goals, mission, vision, and core values.
  • Assists the Library Director in monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and efficiency of service delivery; identifies opportunities for innovation and improvement; and facilitates positive change in the library.
  • Responsible for the development of Person County Public Library Outreach initiatives.
  • Management and evaluation of Outreach staff (one full-time and one part-time position).
  • Takes responsibility for the operation of the library in absence of the Director; advises and participates in library operations, management, and planning.
  • Assists with ensuring consistent operation of library facility, coordinates building maintenance and repairs with county maintenance teams.
  • Assists with hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating staff to coordinate services.
  • Assists with interviewing, training, and coordinating volunteers.
  • Communicates policy and procedure updates, and other vital information to Library Pages.
  • Maintains accurate files related to maintenance, service, and other vendor contracts and reviews all files and contracts, annually with Director.
  • Maintains an open, positive, and collaborative working relationship with Person County IT, technology vendors, and Cardinal consortium staff.
  • Assist patrons at the circulation desk in-person and via the telephone; verify eligibility, complete and update registration records, update registration information, check out and renew materials, collect fines and fees, explain and enforce policies and procedures, provide information about library services and operations, answer patron questions, problem solve issues and assist with maintaining library statistics data.
  • Assists with financial recordkeeping and cash handling duties.
  • Provides the Library Director and staff with insight and support regarding scheduling and coordination of library programs.
  • Selects and maintains collections of resources to meet the needs of patrons.
  • Promotes the library in the community through printed materials and social media interaction and attending meetings and functions as required as a representative of the library.
  • Identifies and pursues grant opportunities, with Library Director approval.
  • Abides by, enforces, and participates in the implementation and ongoing oversight of Person County and Person County Public Library policies and procedures.
  • Participates in other library activities and programs, as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association in library or information science or related field.
  • Three to five years' experience in library supervision or management or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Special Certifications and Licenses

  • North Carolina Public Librarian Certification eligibility and must obtain within one year of employment.
  • Passport Program certification must obtain within 3 months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following :

  • A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • A background check for all candidates. Some positions also require a credit check.
  • Additional screening and testing required for some positions.

    NC STATE RETIREMENT SYSTEM Employee contributes 6% of pre-tax salary and county contributes 13.65% for county employees and 15.04% for law enforcement effective 7 / 1 / 2023. EMPOWER 401K & 457 County contributes 5% of your salary into the 401k and you can contribute up to 80% of your compensation or up to $17,500. No county contribution for part-time

    PAY PROGRAM MERIT INCREASES Annual increases based upon performance (up to 3%) LONGEVITY PAY Based on years of service 1 year, but less than 5 years - .50% of annual salary 5 years, but less than 10 years - 1% of annual salary 10 years, but less than 15 years - 2% of annual salary 15 years, but less than 20 years - 3.25% of annual salary 20 years, but less than 25 years - 4.5% of annual salary 25 years or more - 5.75% of annual salary TUITION REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM Employees may be reimbursed for eligible expenses up to a total of eight hundred dollars ($2,500) per fiscal year

    CERTIFICATIONS 1.5% salary increase per advanced certification pertaining to the job DIRECT DEPOSIT Person County Government employees are paid bi-weekly with Direct Deposit

    WELLNESS PROGRAMS COUNTY EMPLOYEE GYM $25 membership fee per year for full-time or $50 for part-time public safety employees at the Sheriff's Dept. or EMS whose position requires you to be "fit for duty". WALK OR WORK OUT PROGRAM The County allows employees to be physically active three times a week for 45 minutes
