Position Summary

The Y is a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation's largest provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. This position provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in our swimming program.

Essential Functions

• Instructs group and individual swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, following YMCA lesson plans and conducts swim stage evaluations.
• Maintains current swim instruction certifications.
• Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
• Maintains records as required (progress tracker, progress reports, class rosters, etc.).
• Attends department staff meetings, in-service training, and mandatory YMCA meetings.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, best practices, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Adheres to all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices, including emergency and safety procedures, and supports the associations' philanthropy efforts.
• Organizes and returns class equipment to storage areas. Reports damaged equipment. Completes incident reports as necessary.
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
• Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.
• Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
• Responsible for securing substitute instructor and report schedule changes to the director in advance.
• The position is identified as safety sensitive and subject to required, random drug testing.
• Assist in all areas as assigned and completes all projects as assigned by supervisor.
