ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Summary : Accurately identifies patients and employs proper venous or capillary techniques to collect specimens. Ensures specimens are correctly labeled and verified before leaving the patient. Prioritizes and transports specimens within established turnaround times.

Major Responsibilities :

• Provide guidance and support to non-certified phlebotomists regarding specimen acceptability and challenging draws.
• Collect and receive specimens following laboratory protocols and procedures.
• Adhere to universal precautions, safety protocols, and infection control policies including bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
• Assist in orienting students and new laboratory staff to phlebotomy procedures.
• Perform additional duties as needed, including coverage for Phlebotomy Technical Specialist or Coordinator roles.

Education : High school diploma or equivalent required. Phlebotomy certification from ASCP, AMT, NHA, ACA, or NCCT is mandatory.

Experience : No prior work experience required.

Skills and Abilities : Knowledge of proper blood collection and handling techniques. Strong manual dexterity and ability to communicate clearly. Physical ability to perform moderate to heavy walking and light lifting up to 25 pounds. Near visual acuity to discern colors is necessary.

Physical Requirements : Interaction with patients following developmental models. May involve contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
