Wastewater Treatment Supervisor

This is a transfer opportunity, and first consideration is given to qualified transfer-eligible members of Teamsters Local 117 Wastewater Treatment Division, Supervisors. If no qualified transfer-eligible candidate is selected, external applicants will be considered.

King County protects water quality and public health in the central Puget Sound region by providing high quality and effective treatment to wastewater collected from our local sewer agencies. We collect and clean wastewater while recovering valuable resources for a healthy and resilient Puget Sound. King County's wastewater operations staff provides the expertise and dedication required to operate and maintain wastewater treatment and collection facilities to ensure protection of the environment and the health of all King County communities.

About The Role : The responsibilities of this classification include supervising and directing the overall mechanical maintenance teams and programs for the West Point wastewater treatment plant and West Section Offsite facilities. Maintenance programs include but are not limited to the repair, replacement, and preventative maintenance of industrial equipment, electrical and instrumentation control systems. Incumbents supervise and direct the work of lead, skilled trades, semi-skilled trades, engineering, and technical support positions. Incumbents also assist the treatment plant manager in the development, implementation, and revision of short- and long-term goals and objectives for the plant's operation and maintenance.

The primary function of this role is to lead, direct, and supervise the team members (maintenance mechanics, engine mechanics, offsite maintenance mechanics) assigned to the Mechanical Maintenance team for West Operations and Maintenance unit.

As a Wastewater Maintenance Supervisor within the Operations and Maintenance team you are expected to be a "People Leader"; to lead and develop your team to align with the County and Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) leaderships goals, expectations, standards, and initiatives. You will be a mentor and guide to those working within your team and those that work with your team

The Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) in King County (KC) is hiring a leader for the West Maintenance team. This position will lead a team of 26 treatment plant and offsite mechanical and engine mechanic staff, oversee the maintenance of the West Section facilities, and be an active member of the O&M Leadership team.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing :

  • Supervise and direct the work of lead, skilled trades, semi-skilled trades, engineering, and technical support positions assigned to the maintenance program. Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, conducting performance evaluations, training, and recommending disciplinary actions.
  • Supervise the review and coordination of preventative and maintenance practices including life cycle analysis of equipment and forecasting short- and long-term equipment needs, equipment replacement and repairs.
  • Develop and implement the work unit's operating and capital budgets; make recommendations on budget expenditures and monitor expenditures to ensure that budget is within established guidelines.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal maintenance business policies and procedures for all equipment and systems at the treatment plant.
  • Represent the section and / or division on capital replacement, expansion, and new facility projects.
  • Act as the maintenance representative on capital improvement projects to provide input and direction on what the maintenance requirements will be for the designated project. Provide technical expertise on maintenance related issues that arise during the development, implementation, and start-up of assigned projects.
  • Participate in the planning, development, and implementation of systems and / or processes to support the maintenance program at the treatment plant.
  • Participate as a member of the section or division management team and act as the section or division management representative on internal and external committees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring :

  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in a skilled trade or craft occupation, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical discipline such as engineering
  • Advanced knowledge of and demonstrated experience in life cycle analysis of industrial equipment, electrical and / or instrumentation systems or processes.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in maintenance techniques and practices in an industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, motors, HVAC systems, SCADA systems, and instrumentation.
  • Preventive maintenance programs and asset management systems.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ensure employee safety compliance within established guidelines and regulations.
  • Advanced experience (3 or more years) in maintenance and repair of equipment used in wastewater treatment facilities.

  • Valid unrestricted Washington State Driver's License

  • Prior or current wastewater maintenance supervisor experience or 3 years of industrial maintenance lead responsibilities.
  • Demonstrable experience with Capital Project teams and other work groups, consultants, or contractors.
  • Experience with CMMS systems and how to utilize extrapolated data in a meaningful way.
  • Practical and progressive experience in an industrial maintenance setting, craft, or trade.
  • Managing budgets and Capital project support.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning, scheduling, coordination and prioritization.
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Strong mechanical, machining, welding background and experience.
  • Physical Requirements :

  • Must be able to physically move in and around county worksites such as treatment plants, regulator stations, pump stations
