The DDS State-Operated Stabilization Training Assessment Re-Integration (STAR) homes provide individuals with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities experiencing an acute crisis with person-centered support and crisis stabilization on a time-limited basis to enable them to successfully return home or transition to less restrictive living settings. The homes strive to empower individuals to be self-reliant as their skills, strengths, perseverance, and abilities allow so they can transition from crisis stabilization services to long-term community living. STAR currently provides services to adolescents (11-17 years old) and adults (18 years of age and older) who are receiving regional center services. The STAR homes are 4 to 5 bed homes located in community settings (Vacaville, Springville and Costa Mesa).
The Pre-Licensed Psychiatric Technician provides direct care, modeling, coaching, instruction and training on nursing care and behavioral support plans to community direct care staff and consumers following established standards and procedures of the STAR residential and Crisis Assessment Stabilization Services (CAST) mobile crisis services. The PLPT provides basic and general behavioral training and psychiatric nursing care to STAR residents. The PLPT will perform on-site direct care, modeling, coaching, instruction and training with consumers and their caretakers / direct care staff in in community settings, such as consumer's homes, hospital or psychiatric settings.
This position requires lawful authorization to work in the United States. The Department does not sponsor employment visas for this position.
Effective October 1, 2025, State employees are subject to a salary reduction of three percent in exchange for five hours per month of the Personal Leave Program.

The classification of Pre-Licensed Psychiatric Technician is a temporary classification in the Psychiatric Technician series. Incumbents must have been graduated from a training program for Psychiatric Technicians accredited by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners or must have been accepted by that Board to take the licensing examination.
All positions in this class are established for nine months and all appointments are made on a temporary basis. Incumbents will be required to become licensed by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners within this nine-month period of time.
