Overview Design Physicist role at Physics World.

Join us and contribute to national security science at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where our employees apply their expertise to create solutions for big ideas that make our world a safer place.

This position is within the Design Physics Division, Strategic Deterrence Directorate. The role may offer a hybrid schedule with some days in the office and some remote work after a probationary period. The exact schedule depends on team and project needs.

Responsibilities Assess complex physics interactions that take place in nuclear explosions.

Design and analyze experiments exploring the physics of nuclear explosives.

Simulate weapons phenomena and perform weapons assessment and certification tasks using physical models in computer codes.

Define and implement stockpile stewardship for specific weapons systems.

Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer‑reviewed publications, in both open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL. Interact with external stakeholders at DOE / NNSA and across the interagency as needed.

Develop expertise in interrelated fields of physics important to weapons assessment and certification.

Travel minimally or substantially based on project needs.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Responsibilities at the SES.3 Level

Independently develop and assess complex physics interactions in nuclear explosion scenarios where problems may be ill defined.

Work as a technical expert on multidisciplinary teams.

Guide analyses and lead the design of experiments exploring the physics of nuclear explosives.

Qualifications Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.

PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.

Demonstrated record of outstanding research in relevant areas of physics and engineering.

Experience with computer‑based design and analysis of experiments.

Aptitude for mastering new fields of physics; demonstrated creativity and breadth of understanding in applications of complex physical processes.

Experience using advanced computational facilities for applied physics analysis and research.

Proficient verbal and written communication and presentation skills to author technical publications and deliver scientific presentations.

Ability to work effectively independently and in a multidisciplinary, team environment.

Demonstrated self‑motivation and initiative in addressing challenging problems.

Additional Qualifications at the SES.3 Level

Advanced knowledge of physics, engineering, or a related field.

Significant experience leading independent applied physics research and top‑quality publications.
