Hunter is committed to active engagement with students and the community at large, and embraces equity, inclusiveness, and global awareness in all dimensions of our work.

CUNY’s Hunter College, School of Arts and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2026. The appointment will be at Hunter College, where the candidate will be tenured in the Department of Sociology, with a responsibility to the Asian American Studies Program. This position will be associated with the new CUNY Graduate Center Discipline in Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies.

We seek scholars with expertise in teaching and research on the sociology of Asian American groups in the United States, who employ comparative, qualitative, and / or quantitative methods in their research on Asian Americans. It is preferred that their work is shaped by engagement with race and ethnic studies. Subfield specialties include refugee and immigration / migration studies; diaspora and transnationalism; law, citizenship, and policy; political economy; labor markets; social movements and activism; comparative and relational race studies; community formation and urban / suburban studies; cultural production; and marriage and the family.

Courses that are of interest to Hunter College’s Asian American Studies Program and Sociology undergraduates include : Asian Diaspora in the Americas; Asian Migration / Immigration; Racial Formation; Asian American Immigration Policy and Law; Globalization, Labor and Race; Asians in the US; Diaspora, Ethnicity and Race; Asian Americans at Work; The Asian American Family; and Asian American Transracial Adoption.

The successful candidate will be a faculty member and associate of the Asian American Studies Program teaching courses and providing service. This program has a 32-year history at Hunter College and currently offers a 12-credit minor and enrolls almost 1,000 students in its courses annually.

The candidate will be tenured in the Sociology department, with a productive and energetic faculty working to build synergy and public engagement while collaborating with various programs and institutions across Hunter College. The Sociology Department offers a liberal arts major as well as a master’s program to a large, diverse and vibrant student body. The department has over 400 students who are Sociology majors, full time and adjunct faculty teach over 90 courses a semester, and it serves over 3000 students each semester.

Last but not least, the candidate will have a Graduate Center of the City University of New York (GC-CUNY) appointment and responsibilities in the PhD BRES (Black Race and Ethnic Studies) Programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. degree in Sociology or equivalent social science. The successful candidate is a Sociologist and an Asian Americanist. Also required are the ability to teach successfully with demonstrated scholarship in some of the above-listed areas and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Since the appointment is for a tenured Associate Professor, expectations are that the successful candidate has moved substantially beyond the dissertation project, having published a well-received first book(s) or the disciplinary-specific equivalent. In addition to teaching, candidates should also have strong records of research, funding, advising, mentoring and a commitment to public outreach.

We are especially interested in scholars who will be able to contribute to both the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary orientation of the newly established Black, Race, and Ethnic Studies PhD and MA program. This position is part of a Mellon Foundation-funded faculty cluster hire in Black, Race and Ethnic Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center..
