This position is located at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washington - DC. The Washington DC VA Medical Center - located within sight of the Nation's Capitol - is the only health care system that specifically provides care to Veterans. Offering tertiary care in a Complexity Level 1A hospital.
Qualifications
- United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training : Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
- (NOTE : VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are : (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME / AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as 'Physician Resident Providers' (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
- Rather - they are to have a 'scope of practice' that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
- Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Preferred Experience : At least 3 years of progressive leadership experience as a senior leader section / service chief with clinical and administrative oversight for a full range of areas (including inpatient and outpatient care)

The Washington DC VA Medical Center (DC VAMC) Chief of Staff (COS) is part of an Executive Leadership Team (ELT) structureDC VAMC is a Level 1A Complexity VA Medical Center with an operating budget of over $1.2B with complex clinical - research - and education programsThis position works closely with the ELT to meet the DC VAMC mission and visionThis includes improving the quality and efficiency of VA care - as well as executing initiatives and goals determined by executive leadershipThe ELT are responsible for oversight and management of their respective functional areas - and work in collaboration with all service chiefsThe COS reports directly to the Executive Director and is responsible for providing administrative leadership and medical guidance to the medical and clinical care staff with an emphasis on patient safety and promotion of high-quality healthcare for VeteransAs a physician executive - the COS is actively involved in DC VAMC's management of resources - strategic planning - staff satisfaction - environment of care and improving organizational effectiveness and performanceThe Chief of Staff : develops and maintains professional working relationships with local medical schools affiliated with DC VAMCLeads senior-level recruitment searches - assembles search committees - and applies VA search and recruitment rules and regulations to attract highly qualified service / department chiefs with an array of talent which supports positive outcomes and growthPromotes the development of health care professionals through mentoring - teaching - counseling - and the application of self-assessmentCreates an environment which fosters continuous quality improvementServes as the Chair of the Medical Executive Committee - Clinical Products Review Committee - and Peer Review Committee at DC VAMCIs directly involved in ensuring performance management measures and targets issued by the Performance Management Workgroup are addressed and met by medical and clinical departments / servicesProvides leadership and expert guidance to promote public and population health programs - and to protect and improve the quality of care and health of Veterans who choose Veterans Health Administration (VHA) VA health care systemOversees the recruitment of certified licensed professional staffOversees the Medical Executive Board to ensure appropriate practitioners (staff and contract) are credentialed and privileged in accordance with requirements of VA and The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare OrganizationsAnd monitors medical staff compliance with agency regulations - medical staff bylaws - rules and regulations - VA facility policies - accreditation standards and other regulations as requiredIs clinically and administratively responsible to the DC VAMC Executive DirectorWorks with various services to establish local policy - rules - and regulations within the overall policy of the hospital and ensures that the highest standards of professional practice and ethics are maintainedCoordinates with various service chiefs to discuss matters pertaining to staff personnel - prioritization of projects and equipment - and any phase of critical VA programsReviews and analyzes work methods and operational procedures and makes changes based on findingsResolves technical work problems not covered by precedents or established policies - and coordinates work operations among subordinate units and with other departmental organizations for matters that may adversely affect other operationsVA offers a comprehensive total rewards packageVHA Physician Total Rewards; Recruitment / Relocation Incentive (Sign-on Bonus); Authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance); Authorized Pay : Competitive salary - annual performance bonus - regular salary increases; Paid Time Off : 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave - 13 days of sick leave - 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME); Retirement : Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA; Insurance : Federal health / vision / dental / term life / long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement); Licensure : 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory; CME : Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification); Malpractice : Free liability protection with tail coverage provided; Contract : No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting; Work Schedule : Monday - Friday 8 : 00 a.m - 4 : 30 p.m.Seniority level
