Description :
Surgical technologists work under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon.
They facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures.
They ensure that the operating room environment is safe and that equipment functions properly.
They conduct operative procedures under conditions that maximize patient safety.
Surgical technologists are experts in the principles of asepsis and sterile technique.
They combine knowledge of human anatomy with surgical procedures and tools.
They handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during surgical procedures.
They understand the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
They maintain quality patient care during the operative procedure.
They are constantly vigilant about maintaining the sterile field.
Essential Functions :
They prepare and anticipate instrumentation, equipment, and supplies for use during the procedure.
They set up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with necessary instruments, supplies, and medications.
They perform instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
They participate in procedure final verification and during the briefing process.
They assist with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
They anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure.
They maintain the highest standard of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
They prepare and pass off specimens as appropriate.
They clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization when assigned.
They assist other team members with cleaning the operating room to facilitate turnovers.
They participate in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
They assist in developing a proper learning environment for personnel and students.
They perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
High School Diploma is required.
Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program is preferred.
Membership in the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) is preferred.
Prior training required by a hospital, surgical technology, or military program is essential.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred.
Certification as a Basic Life Support Instructor (BLS INSTR) is preferred.
Physical Demands :
Lifting and carrying of various weights may be required in different capacities.
Regular standing, walking, and occasional sitting are necessary.
Forceful grip and finger dexterity may be involved.
Vision acuity assessments and color vision tests may be performed.
