The Medical Director is a motivated and forward-thinking physician with specialized training in Addiction Medicine or Psychiatry. This leader is responsible for guiding a multidisciplinary team in the detoxification and treatment of individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders within a residential setting. In close partnership with the Senior Leadership Team, the Medical Director plays a critical role in setting and achieving organizational goals, while fostering a culture that values professional growth, collaboration, and clinical excellence among medical and advanced practice staff. Key responsibilities include overseeing the delivery of medical services, managing medical personnel, directing treatment planning, and ensuring the highest standards of patient care. The Medical Director also ensures compliance with all applicable state regulations, accrediting body standards, and current best practices in the field. Additionally, this role is central to cultivating a cohesive and dedicated medical team by supporting staff morale, encouraging open communication, and reinforcing a shared commitment to the organization’s mission of providing compassionate, evidence-based care.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the recruitment, retention, and credentialing of medical staff, including direct practice staff and trainees, ensuring all meet agency and regulatory standards.
  • Provide supervision to promote professional development among direct reports while mentoring clinical managers and supervisors to build supervisory and leadership competencies.
  • Guide the clinical team in evaluating the safety and efficacy of psychotropic medications for children and adolescents, staying informed on innovations in diagnostic assessments, emerging clinical practices, and community needs.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and assessments to inform accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
  • Deliver psychopharmacological services and provide oversight of client interventions and individualized treatment plans.
  • Serve as the clinical lead in treatment planning meetings, offering strategic input to enhance therapeutic outcomes and promote best-practice interventions.
  • Offer expert consultation on complex cases to support diagnostic clarity and understanding of comorbid medical conditions.
  • Provide immediate case consultation and supervisory support in high-risk or crisis situations to ensure timely, appropriate care.
  • Collaborate with the Request for Services and Intake Director and Program Directors to facilitate smooth transitions between programs and ensure appropriate service delivery.
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative partnerships with primary care providers, hospitals, schools, payors, and other community organizations.
  • Participate in the agency’s after-hours on-call rotation, offering consultation and support as needed.
  • Utilize the agency’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) system for timely and accurate clinical documentation, e-prescribing, and tracking program outcomes and performance metrics.
  • Conduct community education programs and actively promote agency services through outreach and public engagement.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through participation in in-service training, supervision, and staff development activities.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the agency’s mission and client care objectives.

Experience And Qualifications

  • Current licensure in good standing in Connecticut as a physician; board certification in Addiction Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Psychiatry
  • Minimum 5 years experience, at least 2 years providing services in a residential setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate a solid grounding in diagnosis and effective and safe use of psychotropic and detoxification medications with clients as well as medication assistant treatment
  • Ability to demonstrate an understanding of core theoretical concepts including crisis, crime victim, trauma, attachment and systems theory, and resilience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with verbal and written fluency in English; bi-lingual fluency in Spanish, or another language widely spoken in our community highly desired
  • Experience working with patients from culturally diverse backgrounds, and the ability to demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity
  • Computer skills required; familiarity with e-prescribing, electronic medical record documentation
  • Medication chain of custody oversight experience
  • Oversee order protocols for health maintenance, vaccines, and prescription refill requests
  • Knowledge and experience of all American Society of Addiction Medicine (“ASAM”) levels of care
  • Familiarity experience with clinical audit implementation and oversight
  • Organize and facilitate regular meetings of nursing department
  • Provide crisis support to other nurses and patients, as needed and in emergency situations
  • Develop and implement innovative nursing models of care that support the delivery of high quality, patient-centered care
  • Provides leadership and management for direct reports, including staff training and development, allocation of staffing resources, workflow management, performance monitoring, pro-active problem resolution
  • Protect the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the organization's privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principle of professionalism as a health care provider

Preferred Qualification -- Board certification by ASAM
