Production Shop Manager

As a production shop manager, you will coordinate Building 3's shop hours of operation with the academic calendar and schedule technician shifts accordingly. You will train staff on the proper use and maintenance of wood, metal, and plastic tools and machinery, as well as on operating WebCheckout software. You will also organize all introductory overviews and demonstrations of shop capabilities for faculty, staff, VIP tours, and students. Among other responsibilities, you will assign daily work tasks to lab monitors, oversee all non-SCAD shop usage requests, and review building usage statistics to ensure the effective use of personnel and space. Additionally, you will collaborate with faculty and the department chair on coursework that requires the use of Building 3.

Under the supervision of the assistant superintendent, you will utilize the university's work order system and coordinate with the design team and physical resources on maintenance, repairs, procurements, and shop equipment installations. You will develop shop policies and procedures, assess space utilization, and update layouts as needed to accommodate new equipment, processes, and student requirements. Responsibilities include performing basic maintenance on shop equipment — while all major repairs must be reported to your supervisor — and overseeing new installations, as well as assisting with shop and lab capital budgets. You will also ensure safety, functionality, and operational efficiency.

In this role, you will conduct quarterly inventories to ensure adequate supplies for the shop. You will collaborate with the EHS department to complete SCAD-wide safety trainings for machinery use, ensure shop policies are consistently followed, and demonstrate the proper operation of all equipment. Additionally, you will review and update safety manuals and participate in university special projects.

The candidate is knowledgeable about wood and metal shop machines and tools such as table and band saws, drills, sanders, and the like. Additionally, they are committed to following workplace safety protocols and standards.

Minimum qualifications:

• At least three years of experience in technical direction, scenic carpentry, set construction, or shop management in film or performing arts
• Professional knowledge and experience in operating, repairing, and maintaining shop equipment and hand tools safely and efficiently
• Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word, and Excel
• Experience managing multiple staff shifts over one week

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in production design or technology
• Experience in technical directing, scenic carpentry, set building, and/or shop supervision in film and performing arts
• Finishing skills, along with mechanical and/or electrical knowledge and experience in an academic environment
• Experience with 3D modeling and graphics programs

Certificates, licenses, and registrations:

• Possession of or ability to obtain a Class “C” Georgia driver’s license
• ETCP Rigging or equivalent certification preferred
• OSHA 10-hour certification preferred

Travel required:

• Less than 10%

Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
