Job Description

Job Summary

As a Senior Systems Engineer-Enterprise Collaboration, you are an expert on the platform and work closely with product, IT, and business stakeholders in an agile workflow, while being expected to embrace and promote an agile mindset. The Senior Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting all components of the WGU Office 365 environment and associated infrastructure, including all related applications, servers, and services. Individuals in this position are expected to maintain a high level of ownership and investment in tasks associated with both new and ongoing O365 based needs. Incumbents must be able to lead efforts in troubleshooting, remediate and optimize all Office 365-based issues, while also working with engineering requirements and providing strategic recommendations to Management.

Job Duties

  • Leads in the building of cutting-edge applications and services to increase and improve the student experience.
  • Exemplifies a mastery of coding excellence and software quality, mentoring others and pioneering new standards and architectural foundations.
  • Fosters and utilizes innovative approaches to problems and functionality for all key stakeholders.
  • Owns technologies focusing on student success and scalability while supporting student-focused user experience.
  • Collaborates with developers, designers, testing, and product management to develop features and innovative approaches to applications and features.
  • Mentors and advises engineering teams on new languages and technologies; act as a resident expert when needed.
  • Establishes a balance between strategic planning and initiatives with development, communication, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • Leads in the prototyping and development of new technology and framework, improving the student experience.
  • Identifies system redundancies and inefficiencies, proposing innovative and cost-effective solutions.
  • Works with internal customers to gather business processes and project requirements.
  • Serves as primary system administrator for the Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 environment, performing system administration, configuration, and support tasks.
  • Handles all basic administrative functions including user account maintenance, reports and dashboards, workflows, and other routine tasks.
  • Completes regular internal system audits and prepares for upgrades.
  • Manages Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 data feeds and other integrations.
  • Coordinates the evaluation, scope, and completion of new development requests.
  • Works with our institutional management team to establish suitable processes to support administrative, development, and change management activities.
  • Assists in training of new users and grows the Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 skillset across the organization.
  • Acts as a liaison between our users, vendors, and the application development teams.
  • Works independently with members of the user community to define and document development requirements.
  • Ensures proper deployment rollback / recover plans exist at all times.
  • Resolves any Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 issues submitted into WGU's ticketing systems.
  • Reviews developer code and PowerShell deployment packages to ensure best practices and procedures are adhered to.
  • Creates and maintains documentation for the Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 infrastructure systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Refreshes development 'Sandboxes' / orgs regularly.
  • Participates in and serves as a resource for any Collaborative Platforms / Microsoft 365 related projects.
  • Designs, builds, implements, and supports the messaging & collaboration technologies solution anchored on but not limited to the Microsoft Office 365 (O365) platform.
  • Leads O365 and Exchange Online enterprise migrations.
  • Designs productivity experience solutions that meet WGU's technical, security, and business needs for applications and workloads.
  • Partners with Product teams for platform capability / functional business requirements.
  • Partners with Enterprise Architecture and Infrastructure Operations peers to develop short- and long-term roadmaps.
  • Leads technical discussions with stakeholder / internal customers that drive decisions and implementation.
  • Leads the engineering area with effective agile delivery processes, service metrics, and financial, vendor, and lifecycle management.
  • Defines and meets SLA / OLA requirements for productivity solutions.
  • Performs vendor relationship management across productivity experience products, partnering with Enterprise Vendor Management and any other stakeholders to achieve company productivity experience strategy.
  • Provides mentoring to junior technical staff.
  • May be required to work occasional evenings and weekend hours to support production releases and resolve system issues.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

KSAs

  • Knowledge and experience with Exchange Online and 2016 versions, Microsoft Teams Online and on premise, and Office Online
  • Knowledge and experience with Azure Active Directory, Azure Rights Management Services, and Information Rights Management
  • Knowledge and experience with Mimecast cloud-based email filtering and management
  • Knowledge and experience with SharePoint Online with expertise implementing and supporting OneDrive for Business
  • Knowledge and experience with Enterprise Mobility & Security solutions, including Intune, Azure AD Premium, Azure Information Protection, and Advanced Threat Analytics and Protection
  • Advanced PowerShell scripting and development skills
  • Ability to create and update advanced complex rules for Dynamic Distribution Lists in Exchange and Dynamic Security Groups in Entra ID
  • Senior-level knowledge of administration and engineering, having performed operation and break / fix activity along with engineering and design
  • Knowledge and experience with M365 for macOS, specifically in the areas of Outlook for macOS, Teams for macOS, and OneDrive for macOS
  • Working knowledge of authentication mechanisms
  • Ability to design and implement IT projects and major efforts, to include documentation, communication, and coordination of all components
  • Expertise with coordinating and assisting customer support (Tier-1 or Tier-2) personnel with M365 related incidents and tasks
  • Ability to develop information system design, governance, process, and procedure documentation
  • Expertise in coordination and escalation of Microsoft support and ability to coordinate with first- and third-party software vendors, as needed for resolution of business-impacting problems

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • 6 years of hands-on experience
  • Experience working in mission critical data center environment, including participation in a 24 / 7 on call rotation
  • Microsoft Certified Professional
  • Git version control experience
  • Participation in a 24 / 7 on-call rotation
  • Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements. Generally, equivalent relevant experience is defined as 1 year of experience for 1 year of education and is the discretion of the hiring manager.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or higher in related field
  • Proven experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), GIT, SQL (especially Spark), Java, Angular 2 or later
  • Development experience with open source LMS, such as Moodle or Salesforce
  • Multiple Salesforce Certifications
  • Experience with nonprofit processes
  • Previous experience working in a SCRUM or Agile environment
  • Broad knowledge of other Microsoft systems infrastructure products, such as Azure and Windows Server, SCCM
  • Knowledge supporting and skills development in Microsoft Power Platforms, including Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, and Power Virtual Assistant
  • Proficient experience with modern authentication with regard to multiple modern browsers, Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus, client profile migration, and mailbox migration
