Fabrication Supervisor

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the performance and oversight of high quality, safe, reliable, timely and cost-effective operation of the company’s fabrication department, consisting of the Machine Shop, Sheet Metal Shop, and Paint Shop in support of the company’s production schedule.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Supervise day-to-day operations of the fabrication department.
2. Assign work orders to machinists, sheet metal workers, and painter and obtain fixtures, special tools, and materials required to complete the fabrication processes and track work order progress.
3. Coordinate with other department supervisors such as Production Assembly and Inventory Control to ensure parts are available when needed.
4. Track and analyze work order hours to detect and correct manufacturing deficiencies.
5. Track and present repair department performance metrics to senior management, as required.
6. Analyze engineering drawings, sketches, and design data of a part to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, select cutting tools, and establish machining speeds and feed rates.
7. Write CNC programs to manufacture parts as required by production work orders and approved Request to Production, focusing on minimizing manufacturing costs and optimizing quality.
8. Upload programs into production CNC machinery, load tooling, and perform set up operations as required by the program.
9. Operate CNC machines to manufacture parts as required by production work orders and approved Requests to Production.
10. Store and back up CNC programs in a centralized location.
11. Maintain a current revision log of CNC programs.
12. Coordinate with the maintenance department to schedule Preventative and Periodic Maintenance on CNC machines.
13. Analyze work orders and other applicable documents to determine materials needed, sequence of operations, and equipment required, and assign work to appropriate Machinists.
14. Train other Machinists in equipment operation and other tasks associated with machining parts.
15. Working from blueprints and standardized work instructions, perform machine operations on manual Machine Shop equipment such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders, to manufacture parts as required by production work orders and approved Requests to Production.
16. Devise, construct and maintain fixtures, tools, dies, gauges and equipment to facilitate manufacturing.
17. Provide technical assistance to the Engineering Department in relation to machining operations and departmental capabilities.
18. Provide estimates on machining time as required from management.
19. Performs additional duties as required.

Job Requirements:

1. Education: High school graduate, 3 years technical school preferred; 1 year general machining, 1-year general metallurgic manufacturing
2. Experience: Minimum 3 years of CNC programming and operation (GIBBS CAM preferred) and 3 years in general Machine Shop work.
3. Skills: Must possess strong work ethic and organizational skills. Ability to effectively prioritize and manage competing demands. Ability to provide leadership, supervise and adapt in a dynamic work environment. Intermediate knowledge of shop mathematics. Intermediate knowledge in general and aerospace machining best practice techniques and the ability to read blueprints and data sheets.
4. Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, reach, grasp, lift and is subject to frequent repetitive motion and vibration. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle and feel. The employee is occasionally required to sit, walk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception. The visual acuity to perform an activity such as: machine set up and usage; visual inspection of parts using precision measuring devices to verify the accuracy of the work performed.
5. Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently in an environmentally controlled shop environment. The employee is frequently subject to hazards. Includes working in very close proximity to moving mechanical parts. The noise level is quiet to moderate.
