JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY :

  • Coordinates all clinical activities related to the Oncology Service Line clinics (Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Breast Surgery and Palliative Care). Interviews, hires, orients, schedules, and evaluates all direct reports.
  • Responsible for ensuring qualified resources are available.
  • Manages program operations during business hours and on a 24-hour 7 days a week basis as dictated by program needs.
  • Assists the Executive Director in budget preparation and control including identifying opportunities and plans to enhance revenue capture and cost containment.
  • Monitors operations costs and is accountable for maintaining adherence to budget. Coordinates and implements development programs for staff to enhance quality, staff and patient satisfaction and retention.
  • Collaborates with the Director and VP to implement the strategic goals for the cancer program.
  • Manages program operations and clinical requests from cancer center providers and Mayo.
  • Supports physicians and staff with clinical outreach activities including research.
  • Collaborates with other cancer center managers in planning and implementing performance improvement activities.

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES :

  • Ensure quality care and assists in planning and implementing performance improvement activities.
  • Coordinates and implements development programs for staff to enhance quality, staff and patient satisfaction and retention.
  • Collaborates with the Director and VP to implement the strategic goals for the cancer program, and annual budget preparation. Identifying opportunities and plans to enhance revenue capture and cost containment.
  • Responsible for planning monthly Cancer Conferences / Tumor Boards.
  • Is accessible to patients 24-hour 7 days a week basis as dictated by program needs.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Direct and indirect patient care.
  • Promotes and supports the development and growth of cancer research.
  • Maintains staffing schedules on all direct reports.
  • Performs yearly and prn evaluations on all direct reports.

  • EXPECTED BEHAVIORS :

  • Bases care on the nursing process.
  • Demonstrates thorough, accurate and timely assessments while exhibiting necessary response to changes in patient condition.
  • Provides and documents care per hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates competence in clinical / technical skills.
  • Provides instruction to patient / families regarding procedure and care following discharge.
  • Maintains at least 4 weeks of staffing schedules on all direct reports.
  • Performs yearly evaluations and prn counseling on all direct reports.
  • Is available 24-hour 7 day a week as dictated by program needs.
  • Seeks educational opportunities to improve knowledge / skill.
  • Is the quality coordinator for identifying, planning and implementing performance improvement activities for the department.
  • Is responsible, in cooperation with the Director, for budget preparation and control including identifying opportunities and plans to enhance revenue capture and cost containment.
  • Communicates in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Performs nursing care following safety principles, OSHA guidelines and infection control guidelines.
  • Provides patient care following the Patient's First Commitment.
  • Advises Medical Director on all activities to insure implementation of program standards.
  • Provides support and direction as required in the area of clinical research in the practice and ensures staff compliance with established research protocols.
  • MANDATORY LICENSE / REGISTRATION / CERTIFICATION :

    The following licenses / certifications are required (if checked) :

    CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation)

    ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

    PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

    NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

    Certification / license : Registered Nurse (RN) and (Oncology Nurse Certification "OCN")

    Additional licensure / credential requirements : Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program for professional nursing, MSN preferred .

    ADDITIONAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Mandatory Annual Education : Confidentiality and HIPAA Corporate Compliance Fall Prevention PPD Campaign Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Safety & Security Chest Pain.

    WORK CONDITIONS

    PHYSICAL / MENTAL DEMANDS :

  • Assist ambulatory patients independently
  • Assist bedfast patients of up to 50 lbs. independently and for weights greater than 50 lbs must use mechanical device or team lifting.
  • Manual dexterity, as used for performing intricate procedures (catheter, dressing changes, IV starts), assembling medical equipment, caring for patients, typing, etc.
  • Push and pull patients in beds and wheelchairs up to 250 lbs. in a wheeled device and for weights greater than 250 lbs must use team assistance.
  • Push / pull carts, medical equipment, supplies up to 23 lbs. on varied surfaces including smooth and carpet
  • Squatting and bending at waist to reach under beds, repetitive crouching as needed
  • Standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling as needed more than 2 / 3 of day
  • EQUIPMENT USED : Pyxis, IV pump, computers, copy machines, fax machines, IV's and other injection access sites.

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS : Exposure to chemotherapy, long periods of standing, sitting, walking; assisting patients with walking; patient lifting.

    PRIMARY CONTACT WITH THE FOLLOWING AGE GROUP(S) :

    NEONATAL / INFANT (0-12 MO)

    PEDIATRIC (1-12 YRS)

    ADOLESCENT (13-17 YRS)

    ADULT (18-64 YRS)

    GERIATRIC (65+ YRS)

    SUPERVISES : 0 - 10 people. A supervisor is responsible for direction of associates' workflow, conducting performance appraisals, and has hiring and termination decision-making abilities.

    OVERTIME ELIGIBILITY : Salaried (exempt)

    CAREGIVER STATUS : Direct Caregiver. A Caregiver is an employee who provides direct patient care, hands-on care, or has skin-to-skin contact with patients.
