Executive Director, Utilities And Energy Management

The University of Miami / UHealth department of Facilities has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Executive Director, Utilities Energy Management to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Executive Director, Utilities and Energy Management oversees the management of functions and processes including financial / budget matters, utilities systems, condition-based maintenance, work management information technology, water program management, and electrical safety programs. The incumbent works directly with the Asst. VP, Facilities and Operations to develop goals and objectives, and provides resource programming, budgeting and resource allocation, program management and training.

Responsibilities include :

  • Oversees all utility use and future energy integration projects.
  • Supervises the operations of the campus Central Energy Plant.
  • Directs the management of the energy resource functions ensuring sufficient provision of required commodities at the most economical cost, service delivery excellence, and strategic planning for future resource utilization and availability. Participates in negotiations for the purchase of electricity, natural gas, water, recycling services & refuse collection. Compiles load profiles for eligible accounts, develops an RFP for prospective vendors, in collaboration with Supply Chain.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs the Medical Campus utility management program. Develops and implements short and long-range utility management goals and objectives. Recommends policies and procedures for effective, efficient, and economical operations.
  • Identifies other energy and water conservations project opportunities new to the University, prepare business case rationale.
  • Builds, leads, and motivates multiple teams, representing the right talent and experience to address various target projects.
  • Fosters team-oriented environment to capitalize on the creativity and diversity of campus project team members and other UM employees alike.
  • Supports the business development and management of strategic relationships with the appropriate market players.
  • Ensures internal control oversight and compliance with laws and regulations, safeguarding of assets, compliance with University policies and procedures, reliability of internal and external reporting, and efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Creates an effective control environment, conducts risk assessment, implements and monitors controls.

Department specific functions include :

  • Directly responsible for the Central Energy Plant, Medical Systems, Steam, building controls and building automation systems monitoring.
  • Develop and implement enterprise-wide energy management strategies aligned with clinical priorities, sustainability goals, and compliance standards.
  • Lead energy and utility planning for capital projects including hospital expansions, renovations, and new healthcare facilities.
  • Collaborate with clinical, facilities, and administrative leadership to ensure energy strategies support safe and reliable healthcare delivery.
  • Oversite of all utility and future energy integration projects.
  • Responsible for the overall supervision of the operations of the campus Central Energy Plant.
  • Direct the management of the energy resource functions ensuring sufficient provision of required commodities at the most economical cost, service delivery excellence, and strategic planning for future resource utilization and availability.
  • Additional 1 million sf in Hospital coverage UHT, SCCC, BPEI and all satellites facilities
  • Participates in negotiations for the purchase of electricity, natural gas, water, recycling services & refuse collection. Compiles load profiles for eligible accounts, develops an RFP for prospective vendors, in collaboration with Supply Chain.
  • Oversee energy procurement, infrastructure reliability, energy efficiency retrofits, and utility budget forecasting across all campuses.
  • Ensure continuous power supply and backup energy systems for critical care areas including operating rooms, ICUs, and data centers.
  • Lead centralized energy monitoring and building automation initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and directs the Medical Campus utility management program. Develops and implements short and long-range utility management goals and objectives. Recommends policies and procedures for effective, efficient, and economical operations.
  • Identify other energy and water conservations project opportunities new to the University, prepare business case rationale.
  • Build, lead, and motivate multiple teams, representing the right talent and experience to address various target projects.

  • Supports the business development and management of strategic relationships with the appropriate market players.
  • Ability to perform tasks independently on own initiative with minimum guidance and direction.

    Core qualifications include :

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • Certified Healthcare Emergency Power Professional (CHEPP) or Certified Energy Manager Certification (within 6 months of hire)
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge, skills and attitudes include :

  • Knowledge of business and management principles. Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and / or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Experience and skill in applying the art and science of utilities management engineering sufficient to formulate, evaluate, nurture, and promote the generation and exchange of new theories, concepts, principles, methods, applications, and practices of utility management.
  • Expert on utility systems operations and management; and extend existing parameters of engineering knowledge and its application and practice to the utility program.
  • Professional Engineering knowledge of utility production and distribution systems including mechanical, electrical, or civil operations.
  • Technical or engineering knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures as they relate to utilities commodity production and distribution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, i.e., organizing and clarifying complex issues, translating messages into clearly understood writing or speech.
  • Proficiency in managing a group of diverse activities and competing interests. Skill in leading, administering, managing, and directing others in a service-oriented environment.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining internal and external relationship involving difficult, formal negotiations.
  • Any relevant education, certifications and / or work experience may be considered.
