Job description

Job Title : Residential / Commercial PlumberJob SummaryA residential / commercial plumber installs, repairs, and maintains plumbing systems in homes, apartments, businesses, and commercial facilities. The role requires diagnosing problems, performing installations and emergency repairs, ensuring code compliance, and delivering excellent customer service.Key Responsibilities- Inspect plumbing systems to identify issues and determine repair or replacement needs.- Install and replace pipes, fixtures, valves, water heaters, pumps, and other plumbing equipment.- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and building plans to plan plumbing installations.- Join, cut, thread, bend, and fit pipes using hand and power tools and fittings.- Troubleshoot leaks, clogs, and system failures; perform repairs on drains, sewers, and water supply lines.- Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing systems for residential and commercial clients.- Test plumbing systems for leaks and code compliance; ensure proper water pressure and flow.- Coordinate with general contractors, electricians, HVAC technicians, and other trades on multitrade projects.- Provide accurate job estimates, material lists, and timeframes.- Respond to emergency service calls; work flexible hours when needed.- Maintain clean, safe work areas and follow safety protocols (lockout / tagout, confined-space procedures, PPE).- Keep detailed service records and report work completion to supervisors or clients.Required Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent.- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation.- Minimum 24 years of hands-on plumbing experience (residential and / or commercial); more experience required for senior roles.Preferred Qualifications- Master or journeymans plumber license or advanced certification.- Experience with commercial plumbing systems (backflow preventers, grease traps, commercial water heaters, hydronic systems).- Experience reading construction plans and coordinating with project managers.- OSHA safety certification or equivalent.Technical Skills- Proficient with pipefitting, soldering, brazing, threading, and welding techniques.- Familiar with materials : copper, PVC, CPVC, PEX, cast iron, galvanized steel, stainless steel.- Ability to use diagnostic tools : pressure gauges, video inspection cameras, pipe locators, multimeters.- Knowledge of water heaters (tankless and tank), boilers, pumps, and booster systems.- Understanding of sewage, storm drainage, and septic systems.- Competence in interpreting blueprints, isometric drawings, and plumbing codes.Soft Skills- Strong problemsolving and troubleshooting abilities.- Good customer service and communication skills; able to explain issues and solutions clearly.- Time management and ability to prioritize multiple jobs.- Physical stamina and dexterity; comfortable working in tight spaces, at heights, and in varying weather.- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.- Teamwork and ability to lead junior technicians or apprentices.Physical & Work Environment Requirements- Lift heavy materials (up to 50+ lbs) regularly.- Stand, kneel, crawl, and climb for extended periods.- Work outdoors and indoors, sometimes in confined, damp, or unsanitary conditions.- Availability for on-call emergency shifts, nights, or weekends when required.Safety & Compliance- Follow all relevant building codes, local plumbing regulations, and OSHA safety standards.- Maintain proper permits, documentation, and inspection records.- Use appropriate PPE and adhere to site safety plans.Career Path & Advancement- Entry-level : Apprentice supervised learning and skills development.- Mid-level : Journeyman certified independent work on projects.- Senior : Master plumber / Project supervisor lead projects, mentoring, estimating, and code expertise.- Opportunities for specialization : commercial systems, service / repair, hydronics, medical gas, or business ownership.Compensation & Benefits (example)- Hourly wage or salary depending on experience and certification.- Overtime and emergency call pay.- Health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off.- Training, certification reimbursement, and tool allowances.
