Job Scope
The School Nurse’s primary responsibilities include providing health care services to Students PK through 12. The School Nurse is called upon to also work with Faculty, Staff and Parents to carry out a wide range of school health activities.
Essential Functions
Preventive Care includes participating in hearing, vision, and other student screenings; health education / prevention efforts for students / campers; CPR and First Aid training for staff and faculty; ensuring that student vaccinations are current; transporting residential students to health care appointments when needed; and communication as needed with administrators, faculty, staff, and parents promoting student health and wellbeing.
Acute and Follow-up Care includes providing direct nursing care for sick or injured students such as assessment, triage, and referral to emergency services (“911”), urgent care, physicians, or other healthcare professionals; accompanying students to the hospital and remaining until parents arrive; complying with physician’s orders for student care; and participating in the evening / weekend on-call rotation for residential students which may include phone consultations and / or an in-person response to the dormitory.
Medication Administration includes distribution of prescription and non-prescription medications to students per doctor’s instructions; communicating with parents about medication issues such as changes and refills; supporting the work of the medication technicians on campus; updating communicable disease letters as needed and assisting with electronic updates of health forms and procedures for all students; and implementing federal, state, and local health regulations.
Administrative Duties include maintaining nursing licensure and CPR certification; assisting in the collection and maintenance of student health and medication records; maintaining membership in the National Association of School Nurses (NASN); participating in division SRT (student resource team) meetings; participating in school-wide events, professional development activities, and meetings; carrying a school radio at all times when on campus; and maintaining strict professional confidentiality regarding health information and records.
Provides healthcare to students and staff.
Ensure consistent implementation of policies / procedures throughout the school and adherence to legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards of nursing practice.
Manage the process for monitoring symptom COVID-19 positive students clusters and staff for support in quarantine, recovery, and return to school.
Provide professional health leadership to administrators and school staff.
Administers medication and provides first-aid.
Assure the appropriate documentation is maintained for school health services and activities.
Responsible for submitting required state regulatory paperwork.
Documents, compiles and analyzes data for required reports on school health
Plans school health programs, in cooperation with medical authority and administrative school personnel.
Serve as a healthcare consultant for school personnel, students, and their families
Participates in medical examinations and reviews findings to evaluate health status students and staff.
Instructs classes in subjects such as child care, first aid, and home nursing, and establishes nursing policies to meet emergencies.
Serve as liaisons between school personnel, family, and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment.
Assist with determining and ordering school level PPE needs based on recommendations. Provide training in PPE use as needed, consistent with guidance.
Counsels students in good health habits.
Cooperates with school personnel in identifying and meeting social, emotional, and physical needs of school children.
Assists in program for care of disabled children.
Other duties as needed.
Education / Training
Possession of a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Hawaii required.
Current CPR / First Aid certified required.
A bachelor’s or equivalent degree in nursing or health related field preferred.
Experience
5 years of related work experience preferred.
Experience working as a school nurse or in a school based health service setting, preferred.
Knowledge
Knowledge of HIPAA rules, regulations, and compliance.
Knowledge of OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens.
Knowledge of School reporting requirements.
Language Ability
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
Math Ability
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
