The WHP within WYDOT is seeking a Port of Entry Officer for the Port of Entry Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The WHP Ports of Entry enhance highway safety and help preserve the highway infrastructure while providing various services essential to commercial vehicle operations throughout the State of Wyoming. Port of Entry Officers have multiple advancement opportunities during their career, including Officer, Special Officer, CVSA Inspector, Lead Officer, Port Supervisor, Port Region Manager, and other advancement opportunities such as Mobile Education and Enforcement Teams, Quality Control, Compliance Review, Office of Overweight Loads, Port of Entry Training Coordinator, and Towing and Recovery Program Coordinator.

Essential functions include working the counter at Ports of Entry and inspecting the paperwork of commercial carrier drivers, weighing and measuring trucks to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and statutes, verifying and issuing permits to commercial carriers, collecting fees and maintaining and reconciling a cash drawer daily. Officers may spend considerable time in a training setting with the lead officer learning the Port of Entry system's requisite policies and procedures. Officers will be expected to become qualified to issue summons (citations) for violations of specific State Statutes regarding the safe and legal movement of commercial vehicles in Wyoming.
Preference may be given to applicants who have previous experience with customer service interactions and computer-related skills. However, anyone interested in these areas is encouraged to apply. We will provide the successful applicant with training and mentorship to ensure that you have the resources and knowledge needed to succeed. Knowledge and use of computers, typing, and ten-key, knowledge in evaluating and decision-making, knowledge of state and federal commercial carrier rules, regulations, and statutes. Minimum qualifications include 1-3 years of progressive work experience. OR an Associate's Degree (typically in Business) with no prior experience required.
Physical working conditions include duties performed at the location and the roadside with the mobile education and enforcement team, shift work that may be specific to a particular location, and working outside and in inclement weather at times.
