Wayfinder Graphic Design Student Intern

Primary Responsibility

Under the general supervision of the Media Facility & Equipment Manager, the Graphic Design Student Intern is responsible for supporting the design and execution of a signage project for the CMC Spring Valley Campus. This is a high visibility project that requires precision, acute attention to detail, and a passion for spending many hours working in grid systems, moving pixels around, and auditing signage for ADA compliance from a design perspective.

Responsibilities of this position include handling day to day design requests like updating templates, proposing new directions based on feedback from stakeholders, implementing final content into templates, creating new design templates, preparing files for vendor handoff, documenting the project, developing new templates for current signage needs, managing and organizing files, designing custom icons, delivering production-ready signs, and writing professional-level design guidelines for future use.

This position is for a fixed term and is for 8 hours per week for 16 weeks. Depending on the project needs, some weeks might require more hours, and some weeks might require fewer hours. The designer will be given advanced notice of any schedule changes in the event this happens.

Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)

Education and experience sufficient for the rigors of the position : incumbent must be student in the A.A.S. program of Digital Media at Colorado Mountain College or in the B.A.S. program of Integrated Media. Student with a grade of at least a C in the Wayfinding Special Topics Course or Typography Course taught in Spring 2025 at CMC preferred.

Special Skills or abilities directly applicable to the position : Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, with expertise in Adobe Illustrator. Working knowledge of the ADA, specifically relating to signage creation and design constraints. Clear understanding and demonstration of design best practices including, but not limited to, file management, stakeholder management, iteration, and attention to detail. Proficiency with basic wayfinding design skills including, but not limited to, hierarchy, readability, layout, composition, balance, iconography. Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with others. Ability to work across teams and manage stakeholders

The hiring pay rate is $17.76 per hour. Benefits include retirement contribution, annual and sick time, mental health resources, and tuition benefit. CMC utilizes a wage progression compensation model that accounts for a candidates skill and experience. Although a hiring rate is listed, this will be set commensurate with the successful candidates qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.

Minimum Qualifications :

Essential Duties

Works with Graphic Design faculty members to implement design and content feedback into current wayfinding system.

Proposes and implements new design directions based on feedback from stakeholders.

Creates new templates to fit into wayfinding system.

Prepares files for RFP handoff and internal team handoff.

Designs custom icons to be used in the wayfinding system.

Applies ADA standards to signage documents, which includes but is not limited to, braille placement, line height, tracking standards, minimum font sizes, appropriate color contrast, and more.

Attend meetings when necessary.

Supervision Received

This position works under the direction of the Media Facility & Equipment Manager, with day-to-day design leadership from a faculty member. This position is an in-office role at the Spring Valley Campus. Remote work is not allowed for this position.

Supervisory Responsibility

Position has no supervisory responsibility.

Special Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of a background check including motor vehicles records report will be required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. Minimal travel is required of the position, but occasionally this position will need to travel for college departmental meetings. May require some evenings to as part of ensuring course quality for the Campus community learning courses.

Working Conditions

This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing / pulling; frequent reaching with hands / arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs. Constant written and oral communication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily, including use of a Wacom Tablet.
