About the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of History and Sociology (HSOC) is a uniquely interdisciplinary unit with an intellectual culture of cross-pollination between sociological and historical scholarship, as well as work in science and technology studies. The School is united around a vision of scholarship and teaching that elucidates processes of local, national, and global change, past and present. This includes promoting a broader understanding of how racial, gender, and class inequalities intersect, as well as how technology, science, environment, and culture are intertwined. HSOC offers a Bachelor of Science degree in History, Technology, and Society and several joint undergraduate minors including Health, Medicine, and Society; Science, Technology, and Society; and Social Justice. At the graduate level, HSOC offers a master's degree in History and Sociology, and a doctoral degree in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science. HSOC is one of six schools in Georgia Tech's Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. The Ivan Allen College is home to researchers and educators whose expertise spans the humanities and social sciences, with strengths in economics, the history and sociology of technology and science, global media and cultures, digital humanities, technology-focused international security, and science and technology policy.

Job Summary

The School of History and Sociology ( hsoc.gatech.edu ) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor in Sociology of Science, Technology, or Medicine, with a focus on Gender, Race, and / or Ethnicity. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students, particularly in the School's graduate program in the History and Sociology of Technology and Science, as well as its undergraduate major and minors, especially Women, Science, and Technology.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses per semester, advise and mentor graduate students, maintain an active research agenda, and engage in professional service at Georgia Tech. The position will begin in August 2026.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Established record of teaching and mentoring excellence in the field, including practices that contribute to student success
  • Established record of research and scholarship in the field commensurate with rank of Associate Professor
  • Active and ongoing research program in the field of sociology of science, technology, or medicine
  • Leadership experience in departmental, university, and professional roles

Student Success Criteria

  • The ability to teach and mentor a distinct student body
  • The ability to promote a welcoming educational / work environment
  • The ability to design and teach curricula that are responsive to all students
