Job description

The Senior Academic Advisor for the School of Film and Television supports all graduate students in achieving successful degree completion by providing individualized academic advising and guidance. In support of this goal, the advisor also plans and executes a range of student and faculty focused activities that enhance the student experience and promote academic success. Under the supervision of the SFTV Assistant Dean, oversee graduate student success initiatives. and ensure fair, equitable, and responsible use of resources in support of SFTV students. Plan, develop, and implement co-curricular programs to educate students about their academic opportunities, degree requirements, and registration processes. Evaluate and counsel t students and prospective students regarding admissions requirements and academic deficiencies, recommending appropriate action. Work with the Office of the Registrar, as well as other University Offices to support students through the degree clearance process. Track, monitor, and report on student attrition to identify trends and recommend plans to address high levels of student attrition. Advise students on navigating processes and the appropriate channels for requests via university resources. Act as a liaison to student-services related resources including central university departments and refer students as applicable.

Position Specific Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Work with the SFTV Assistant Dean to plan, execute, and continuously evaluate academic advisement processes for all graduate students in the School of Film and Television. Coordinate co-curricular activities and functions with resource partners and central university departments across campus for the purpose of engaging students in high impact practices as part of ongoing retention efforts.
  • Counsel prospective and recently admitted graduate students regarding course requirements and registration. Prepare graduation plans for all prospective graduate students to the School of Film & Television and serve as an informed resource for continuing graduate students.
  • Assist students to explore academic opportunities, identify goals, and implement plans to reach those goals through individual meetings and strategic programs.
  • Support all graduate students with various petitions and make recommendations regarding academic transactions including course substitutions, unit overloads, and exception requests
  • Collaborate with SFTV Deans, graduate directors and faculty advisors to develop and sustain initiatives that support student success for SFTV graduate students.
  • Collaborate with Director of Industry Relations and the SFTV Festival Specialist to support students in relation to professional opportunities and post baccalaureate success. Participate in recruitment, admissions, and enrollment events throughout the year as a resource for general program information.
  • Participate in the annual review of the University bulletin, making recommendations to the Assistant Dean. Provide assistance to the Office of the Registrar in maintaining and using the content of these databases and relating them to the students' degrees as well as tracking students' study programs.
  • Prepare periodic reports as requested by the Assistant Dean.
  • Assist faculty with questions / problems related to student records, academic holds, on-course audits, degree audit exceptions and various other advisement-related topics. Must be able to interact with faculty and assist / tutor faculty in advising processes.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean with scheduling student services meetings, activities, and record keeping.
  • As needed, represent the Assistant Dean at committee meetings related to graduate education or academic policy.
  • Provide support and oversight of the Graduate Student Advisory Council.
  • At the direction of the Assistant Dean, hire, train and supervise student-workers to support events and activities, when applicable. .
  • Collaborate with LMU Admissions and SFTV Grad Directors to plan and execute n-person and virtual events for newly admitted students including orientation events.
  • Collaborate with the SFTV Alumni Relations staff to support the development and implementation of programs, events, and communications that strengthen alumni engagement, foster connections with students, and build a vibrant alumni network.
  • Prepare periodic reports as requested by the SFTV Deans.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean to support the mission and goals of SFTV.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically, a bachelor's degree. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation / policy changes.
  • Minimum three years of professional work experience in one of the Student Services program areas or a related field (preferably in education). The incumbent's experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.
  • Experience in planning, coordinating, and executing projects, and responding to changing organizational needs.
  • Experience with Banner (PROWL) or other academic records systems is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of program development and execution, ability to learn registration procedures, graduate program curriculum, university policies, and recruitment practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of admissions procedures and graduation requirements, registration procedures, university policies, and recruitment practices..
  • Understanding of and ability to follow organizational structure and defined processes.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and follow direction.
  • Proven ability to exercise a high level of discretion, handling confidential matters with sound judgment. Commitment to supporting a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • High degree of emotional intelligence.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact professionally with faculty, staff, and university leadership.

    Salary range

    $71,100.00 - $88,900.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
